Need some advice. Single or double bowl for kitchen sink?
Comments (40)Something seems to be missing in EVERY thread about Single vs. Double Bowl sinks. Large single sinks have the space for large items but lack the versatility of having two bowls. Double bowl sinks, regardless of the ratio of the bowls, just aren't big enough for a lot of items. But wait, you can have the best of both worlds IF you have a little space. When planning our kitchen remodel/expansion my wife and I got into the age old one bowl vs. two bowl argument. Our old kitchen had a Kohler Executive Chef double bowl sink. The larger bowl was not big enough for big stuff so I wanted a single bowl - she wanted a double bowl, so here is what I did. I had our KD order a 54" wide, quad door sink base (Medallion) and I put a Blanco Diamond Super Single Bowl (33" X 22") Silgranit Sink (440194) on the left and a Blanco Precis Medium Bowl (13" X 18") Silgranit Sink (440144) on the right. I separated the two sinks by 5" to allow sufficient strength for the granite "Bridge" between the two sinks. I also had 5 groves cut into the "Granite Bridges to allow water to flow between the sinks in the unlikely event someone left the water running in one of the sinks. While it does take some space and a little imagination to accommodate this arrangement I believe it is the best solution to the one vs. two bowl dilemma - we simply LOVE it. Just a comment about the Blanco Silgranit sinks - I cannot ever see us going back to a Stainless Steel or Cast Iron sink - Blanco Silgranit sinks are IMHO the beat sinks available today....See MoreRemote Pop-up Kitchen Sink Drain Pro or Con???
Comments (12)i went a web wending and i got results here is one link that works well http://www.designerhardware.com/Franke_Remote_Sink_Strainer_Basket_p/frk-900p.htm works well, because it includes a lot of explanation. and a diagram showing the sideways outlet. (BUt they didn't think to show the drain pipe coming out of it sideways so you would never know unless someone told you ... !) Alternative: Go to mountainplumbing.com click on kitchen click on the first link there. It's kitchen sink strainers. look at the options, and you'll see "Remote Pop-Up" Again it shows the thingie that sticks out sideways instead of downhill. Again, this is what the drain pipe gets stuck into. and that is how you get your kitchen sink drain to be redirected at a low cost. It actually takes up less space than the product called a drain elbow. So, if you want to save space, this is a solution. Compact plumbing. (compact DWV plumbing). it just so happens that a "remote drain pop-up" assembly gives you a tight-elbow bend without asking for it. It's an advantage they didn't ever think of showing. The manufacturers of this device have totally missed showing that it enables one to have a drawer base under the sink. They don't even think of showing you that the drain comes out sideways. on youtube they have bathroom pop-up videos, but nothing for the kitchen yet. Bathroom pop-ups do not send the pipe sideways. (And I don't know why not). here are some more web search results. searching using "elkay LKAD35" you get to see a complete Z-shaped drain pipe. I'm fairly certain that Once you've seen a photo of a drain pipe zigzagging like a Z (or half of a swastika) you'll wonder why in the world you needed to SEE the image. It is quite simple to imagine and to draw without any previous experience. Here it is on the ELKAY web site. This is the easiest way to get the P trap out of the way, without using a remote pop up device. http://www.elkayusa.com/cps/rde/xchg/elkay/hs.xsl/elkay-res-16470.aspx?pid=LKAD35 another web discussion concluded with "handicap sinks ... drain out the rear next to the back wall. Eminently legal also." more key words : Strainer with Remote Actuated Opening and Closing remote Pop-up Pop-up Basket Strainer franke pop up strainer franke pop up drain strainer franke pop up waste dual pop-up waste assembly Kohler has one: "... dry sink strainer dual cable drain allows you to open the sink drains without getting your hands wet. A simple rotation of the control dial activates the stopper(s) underneath the sink baskets." It looks like the Kohler one sends the pipe downhill instead of sideways. Great if that is what you want. Comments (3)I had a Kohler cast iron sink with the larger basin (16x19) on the left and the smaller (12x17) on the right. The left side was 10" deep, and the smaller side was 8" deep. I loved the shape of the sink as I could lay large pans flat in it for soaking and washing. During prep time, I could have a smaller dishpan on the left going for cleanup of prep pans/utensils but still have room for rinsing veggies, etc, behind that. Clean dishes could go on the right. I'm planning the same configuration in my new kitchen, but a Silgranit sink by Blanco. While I loved the size, but I was never impressed with the finish on the Kohler cast iron sink. Even though I had the grids on the bottom of both sinks, the finish near the drains chipped off easily. It was easily scratched. Just a couple of years into its use, it was a mess. I'm hoping my new Silgrant sink will be more durable....See MorePros & Cons of zero radius v small radius kitchen sink?
