Remote Pop-up Kitchen Sink Drain Pro or Con???

I hate typical kitchen sink strainers. Does anyone have experience with a remote pop-up drain on their kitchen sink? Are they practical? Do they function well or are they a useless hole in your counter as well as being more trouble than they're worth? I don't plan on getting a waste disposal unit if that makes any difference. Which is best - turn, lever or press up and down? My understanding is that the stopper is below the strainer so in theory it should always stay free of debris and open and close well. Do you have any problems with yours? With the stopper in the way is it harder to keep clean? I've found some on-line by Franke, Blanco, Mountain Plumbing and KWC. I believe that they are more popular in Europe but not that common in NA. Thanks for any help.
