P.T.M about Pioneer Roses and how they...
Comments (1)Lux, are you coming to Great Rosarians? Mike Shoup will be there, to speak, and I bet you can ask him. He's a great guy. I have seen some of the roses at ARE, but I don't know how they do here. Jeri...See MorePioneer roses from ARE
Comments (8)I have grown 'Thomas Affleck' for years and it is truly wonderful. Even here in zone 4, growing in a windy & partially-shaded spot, it pumps out blooms all summer long with NO disease whatsoever...and I don't spray. The roses around it can be afflicted but it never succumbs to any form of disease. It gets tall and bushy and has brilliant-colored blooms which light up the dark corner of my garden. Not of interest to you probably, but to other cold-zoners like myself, it is winter-hardy here. This surprised me; being a 'Texas' Pioneer rose. Apparently it doesn't discriminate! It is an all-round delightful rose. It has great rebloom and bears loads of flowers over my short growing season. It will even have some blooms after the fall frost most years. I used to have 'Republic of Texas' but it didn't last long here. It never got taller than 2 feet and the blooms shattered quickly. I lost it to winter a couple of years ago. It was a pretty little rose but wasn't disease resistant here. New to me this past summer are 'Cole's Settlement' a single with large, pearl-colored blooms and 'Star of the Republic' with very cupped and double blooms of a pretty soft peach. They are too immature yet for me to comment on anything in the way of health, size, or vigor. 'Cole's Settlement' produces nice hips in the fall which is a plus in my book. Comments (6)This is a wonderful book and one that should be in every rosarian's library. I just found out today that William Welch is going to be giving a lecture in my town Sept. 16 - cant wait to go! He will have 3 of his books for sale there, 2 of which I dont have and plan to get. I do have all of his rose books, which are also a treat. Beautiful photos and lots of information. Greg Grant is another Texas plantsman who has found and developed so many wonderful plants - have been to his lectures, they are very good. At the semi annual SFA University plant sale in the spring, I bought a lavender crepe myrtle that was taken from some that were his grandmother's at the old home place in Acadia. I also got a climbing sport of Belinda's Dream - Greg says he thinks it only blooms once, but will be interesting to see! The fall sale is coming up October 6 - for those of you that can get to Nacogdoches, it is a marvel of unusual plants - I go to both these sales and they are some of the highlights of my gardening year. Comments (7)Hi Sammy, I have 3 Pioneer roses: Thomas Affleck, Pioneer Spirit, and Mier Y Teran. Of these 3, my favorite is Pioneer Spirit, for it's disease resistance, remontant nature, and bloom color (I luv pinks). Fragrance is detectable only up close to the actual bloom. It's comparable to Sombreuil, as it repeats well if you deadhead, but the growth so far is not as aggressive. It hasn't grown taller since purchased this Spring, just wider by maybe a foot. Now Mier Y Teran, purchased the same time from ARE along with Pioneer Spirit, is already over 6'x3'. It has a nice fragrance, but I haven't warmed up to the color yet. It's more of a peachy/pink coloring, not to my liking but maybe someone else. It is VERY disease resistant. I'm still undecided with Thomas Affleck. Hope you find something useful from my post.
