Am I being too picky??
Comments (41)Every kitchen project has snafus. I think once your cooktop is in you will probably not forget, but focus on other things that could have/should have been different. For instance, do the drawers to the left of the sink open without hitting the knobs on the drawers at a right angle to them? Or maybe that is a fancy inside corner drawer? One of my regrets is that my cabinets over/adjacent to my cooktop are not spaced wider than the cooktop. I also had a snafu with the countertop overhang. We got the island right but somehow miscommunicated on the perimeter overhang and is something I chose to live with. Doesn't bug me as much as I thought it would. I guess the point I'm trying to make is remods are a big project and even the best laid plans can go awry. Sometimes you have to choose to live with something and keep the project moving. Then again, now is the time to make that change if you think you cannot. In the end, most of us are happy with the overall finished product and often end up focusing on something all together different in the end....See Moretile disaster (or am I just being too picky?)
Comments (23)Thanks so much everyone. You've been very helpful...I will certainly insist on having the backsplash redone. @sophie123: Yes we bought/paid for the tile from a separate source with which the GC has a preferred relationship/discount. Maybe they'll furnish more tile at wholesale, since they get a lot of business through him. We've otherwise been happy with this GC and I really hate to see this happen all around (times are tough and this is a big hit to his bottom line). @renorman: Your installer followed the enclosed directions. Mine did not: they left the tile overnight before the paper was pulled off. So it was too late to do any adjusting. I did check your thread: WOW that is one beautiful kitchen and yes, the bump does really stand out. I did see that you're supposed to take a 2x4 or similar item and push on the tiles to even them up depth-wise. Wonder if he did that....See Morewood floor finish (am I being too picky)
Comments (12)A seal coat plus two finish coats is usually sufficient unless the finish was applied too thin. An extra coat should not be too much. No urethane applied on site will be completely free of trash and defects. There are things that can add to it like a dirty finish bucket, windy days, people coming in and out of the house, a/c cycling on, poor vacuuming and others. There's no fast hard rule on an acceptable amount. It's a matter of looking at the particular job and determining how close you can get to perfect, and how close you are now. Bona sells several water based urethanes. Ask your finisher which finish he applied and ask if you can pay an upcharge for a better product in addition to investigating what caused your scratches and trying to eliminate the source(s). The main reasons for peeling finish are surface contamination and poor surface preparation. If you use Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner exclusively, you should not have to worry about peeling finish in the future....See MoreAm I being too picky?
Comments (31)It needs to be re-done, I'm afraid by someone else. I wouldn't want that same guy going near my backsplash again. Hire someone who is experienced; this guy evidently was not. So sorry about this. But once it's done right, you will have the pleasure of enjoying it for years to come. Also, while I prefer an outlet installed horizontally the way yours is, it's too high. Anything plugged into it will show the cords dangling from it. If you decide to re-do the backsplash, see if you can lower the receptacle too....See Morecheri127
