Causes and Solutions for FL Smells
Comments (20)debrak_2008, Why not simply add a recirculation system to your hot water line? This will ensure every tap in the house has almost instant hot water. gates1, I don't think you'll get much build-up from powder detergents. For the most part, when you add water to a substance and then evaporate the water, you're left with the original substance. Liquid detergents are so gooey and sticky that they are bound to cause build-up problems in the detergent drawer as well as the machine. I've never had powder detergent cause build-up in the drawer, ever, and it's unlikely that it would cause problems in the washer either. I also think overuse of cold washes and fabric softener are definitely factors. Fabric softener is released during the final rinse. That means whatever is left in your machine after the final rinse will evaporate and leave a slight oily residue in its place. If the next wash uses cold water, it's unlikely to pick up that residue and may actually deposit more residue on top. I think this whole issue starts and stops with fabric softeners and liquid detergents. Hot water washes in themselves don't necessarily solve the problem, but can prevent it from happening in the first place by limiting the amount of residue left in the machine. Cold water washing exacerbates the problem because it is not hot enough to remove the fabric softener/liquid detergent buildup left from the previous wash/rinse. Use powder detergent, dilute the fabric softener or use less, and wash regularly on HOT. For those using liquid fabric softener, it may be advisable to start your "laundry day" with a load of whites on the HOT cycle and progress to cooler cycles and darker colors. The reason for this is simple. The last time you did laundry, your machine had a very slight fabric softener residue left in it from the final rinse. To have the best shot of removing that residue, start out with a HOT wash....See MoreCheap vs Pricey Spices
Comments (23)I buy from everyone. Best ground cumin I've found was from Gordon Food Service... and dang cheap. Under $10 for a 2lb jug as I recall. I think whole cumin has some flavor notes I don't get from ground so I buy that from Penzey's. My chili mostly has the ground cumin and I top note the cumin flavor with crushed seed. I've long been a fan of the super cheap black pepper.... as good or better then the common brand names. Penzey's addicted me to blending my own black pepper. I bought a mortar and pestle and pound my Malabar and Tellicherry into a custom blend. I have a shaker of the cheap stuff and any leftover pepper in the mortar goes into it. This has worked well so even when I'm in a hurry and just want a quick shake I get some of the good stuff. I love the smell and might have to crush some tonight for a good whiff. I've not found the pepper grinder I want so I'm crushing them until I do. It is working well enough crushing when cooking and putting the extra in a shaker so I'm in no hurry to find a grinder. Growing my own rosemary and cayenne peppers in my kitchen year round. Looking at some habenera strains on the Internet to try. The rosemary bush is 4-5 years old (?) and I probably should start over with a new plant. Found I like fresh rosemary in my salads and dried in my spagetti sauce. Cilantro I buy fresh in the grocery store and dry any I don't use in a couple days. Sometimes I need a little bit of a spice so I'll buy a jar from the grocery store. I bought a 2lb jar of cumin from the meat market because GFS is 30 miles away... not as good but it will have to do for awhile (extra whole seed to help it). I save the jars and refill them from my bulk packages. My dad has no choice but to buy pumpkin pie spice from the local Amish... they are the only ones with a 50lb bag of it. Dad helps bake 5000 pies for a local festival each year.... they always sell out. : ) lyra...See MoreWhen do you trash your spices?
Comments (36)To clarify further: It was thick slices of potato rubbed with oil and paprika and sent to the oven till they develop that nice crusty brownish layer, which is the best part. The texture came out perfect but the taste was a bit bitter. I thought nothing could go much wrong because those potatoes spent quite a while in the oven, and took 2 or 3 more bites, which was very stupid & I sure paid for it. That particular paprika wasn't even past the use-by date. Took my several months before I bought new paprika, and that new paprika sat in the kitchen for another couple of months before I picked up the courage to use it....See MoreLinens smell like mold. Comments (37)Oh thanks so much, everybody, for helping me through this little mystery! I neglected to report back on the brand new sheet that I washed as an experiment: with the Twindos at its regular setting (14ml for white, I think,) the gasket looked suds-free at the end. I've been adding a rinse using the app, and it does seem that everything is back to normal. Some things needed to go through hot/ Sanitize washes more than once, with an extra rinse.I haven't tried STPP yet, because I think it's OK without. We'll see. Jerrod, I'll try bumping it down if the problem persists. I never considered our water super soft--at least I don't hear people complaining about it here. It's just city water. I know it's on the lower end of "hard," whatever that means. Thanks for the tip. It must be challenging with 14 gpg! And Jenny, glad to hear you've survived the snow. I've got some friends out there who shared some amazing photos. Thanks again, and happy laundering :-)...See MoreBumblebeez SC Zone 7
