Is it a dead critter?

I think I see something but I am not sure, and I'm getting cross-eyed guessing what it is!

I see eyes.....I think.

Yes, that's the hint...it is a dead critter. I came across him on my walk in the woods the other day...

I see a gray thing that has a mouth like a fish. So it's probably safe to say that's not it.

I see it!!! Finally I got one! Had to use the iPad and enlarge the photo but it see the little bugger!! LOL!

That was a great question, Raven! And Annie's clue that this is a forest floor is a big help, too. I *think* I see it.

Another thing that you can do if your browser has a zoom feature is to use that. Mine has three little dots in the upper right hand corner that when I click on it I can make original pictures and text bigger.

To enlarge the screen, hold down Ctl and tap your + key. To make it smaller again, it's Ctl and the - key.

As long as it isn't a dead Walking Stick Insect then I think I see it.

It's a dead vole...no idea why. It didn't seem injured and it's weird he would be above the leaf litter...but there he is.

Could be a shrew...I'm not sure I'd recognize the difference...I know it's not a mouse or a mole. You're probably right rhizo, with that pointy nose...

Yep that's the dead critter! I couldn't tell exactly what kind of rodent it was.

I saw what I thought looked like several dead critters....don't think that was one of them. My cats used to kill them and bring them to my steps. I would feed them to the possums. Possums loved them....their soft little bodies. Great treat for them.

That's the thing that I saw that I thought was a mouth of a fish. His hind end looks like the open mouth. I didn't see the head or snout.

I had looked at that, and changed my mind several times about whether that was "it" or not. I've never seen a vole before, alive or dead. It shows up quite blue on my monitor, which is why I zeroed in on it, but never could have figured out exactly what it was. Apparently my eyesight isn't the best anymore, either, when it comes to monitors. I used to be pretty good at finding things in pictures of this sort! I still enjoy them though, thanks for posting this, Annie!

A vole looks more like a mouse. They are a true pest of gardeners, farmers, and orchardists. In the winter, voles will chew the bark from woody trees and shrubs, causing some real damage.

This guy is a little shrew, a ravenous carnivore and insectivore. As tiny as they are, shrews have a reputation for being very feisty and fearless. They have sharp teeth and their bites are mildly venomous.

We don't see shrews very often, but they are very common. They live under leaf litter or in tunnels that some other animal has excavated.

I should have recognized it by it's little hands.

I just wanted to say that you guys have amazing eyeballs....

I couldn't see it for love nor money...
