Best Near Whites of the Daylily Season 2018
Comments (36)Now that I am home again, I had to post this lily. It is Voila Francois. No doubt, the most perfectly formed white I have. I don't think I have ever had an ugly bloom on this one. The second is Stardust Dragon. (I don't know this new trick Houzz performed in putting my photos together! Not my intention. It bopped my narrative below it and I have to edit.) New this year. But it multiplied rapidly and bloomed and then rebloomed. I think I will like it . Kate...See MoreDaylilies That Defy Color Description 2018
Comments (21)Well since I had some success posting the other day I thought I would try again . Not holding my breath though. I have a number of daylilies whose colors just dont fit into a nice and tidy color description . There is Trahlyta some days it is very purplish other days it is greyish Milk Chocolate which on some days is definitely chocolate but other days is irridescent and has sparkles on the petals and doesnt really look chocolate at all. Joseph's Coat is a gorgeous bloom with many many colors in it Joseph's Coat but dependent on the day the colors can change . Hard to believe the top 2 pictures above are the same plant . Pigment of Imagination , now there is a plant that defies description . When I first got it and it first bloomed , I thought I had the wrong plant . It looked nothing like the images I had seen and I was severely disappointed .......till later in the day I happened to pass by the spot where it is planted . I did a double take . There in front of me was a completely different plant , and on checking it again even later in the day , it looked entirely different again . Greyish pinkish blueish ....all describe the plant later in the day but in the morning it looks like a very unremarkable pinkish daylily. I have many many more daylilies like this as this is the kind of thing that attracts me to a particular daylily . Something unusual , out of the ordinary....See MoreEye No Edge Daylilies 2018
Comments (15)I had more of these than I thought. I think Debra's photos of Willow Dean Smith first encouraged me to add some of these. I won't post repeats as photos of mine are not nearly as impressive as those above. My Willow Dean is not as dark edged as Debra's. I also grow Swedish Girl, Julianna Lynn and Forsyth Flaming Snow but their performance was somewhat subpar this year. I like Wild One and am always tempted to get that one-it is always impressive. And Sherry's Happy Apache is always striking. Lady Liz has such a soft color. So pretty! Here are the two I selected. Snow Prince was new this year. It multiplied well and blooms were pretty although scarce. I will be interested to see if the bud count increases next year. I was pleased with it as a first year plant. Mountain Orchid was also new. I really liked the blooms and coloration on this one. Again, these were probably not the "best" blooming ones in this category but they were new and they bloomed well this first year and I like them! Mine all seem to be this pink/lavender edge. I think I may need different colors in this category! Kate...See MoreEyed and Edged Daylilies 2018
Comments (31)This is my kind of category. My list could go on and on. Mantis, Abilene Lillian didn't do as well here as last year. Maybe it was the weather or maybe I loaded it down with too many pods. I am getting some beautiful seedlings out of it though. Here are my top contenders. Bodacious Bite is always super for us. It never has a bad hair day and it sets pods well. Change My Heart has also been very good. I have been using it for hybridizing too. Sam Abell is a great performer in our garden. We love the wide edge. Here are the runners up. Dr Jules Michael Vinkman is also a favorite. It comes up in the spring looking ratty (it's a semi-evergreen), but always shapes up. Chico Tim has done well for us. Many of Tim Bell's hybrids do not like our climate. Chico Tim does not increase very well, but blooms well every year and at registered height too. Hip Hop Music has not been in the garden very long, but so far it has done well. I include it because I love the flower. Eye, edge, and teeth--what more can you want? I had to include one more. I don't know if this will be a good performer. It has survived two winters so far--one cold and the other mild. I post it because it not only has edge on the petals, but a slight edge on the sepals along with a few teeth. This is Stellar Stitchery. I like the intense eye color and have been using this one in our red and white program. So far it has given us some nice seedlings. I'll post one seedling too. This is Empire of Dawn and Dusk X Ruby Lipstick. We hope it will be an introduction in 2020 or 21. That's all for me. Nancy...See More
