How to set cabinets around an under-cabinet range hood?
Comments (2)What you are talking about is staggered height cabinets. Its a matter of taste: some people like it, some people don't. In some kitchens, I think it looks fine. As for a single cabinet being higher over the range hood, I tend to think it looks like the cabinet was moved to make the range hood fit, because I've seen people do that when they get an OTR microwave: it hangs down too low because its bigger than the old hood, so they pop the cabinet up to compensate.. However if it is part of an overall design of staggered cabinets, it can look nice, and look intentional....See MoreUndercabinet range hood / cabinet size?
Comments (5)If I might point you in a different direction altogether, I would strongly recommend not having a cabinet at all above the hood because it is essentially wasted space. The six or eight inch vent tube from the hood runs up through the middle of that cabinet and what's left is really not worth the bother. What you could do, instead, is utilize that space to make a glorious hood that would be the focal point of the kitchen. If your kitchen plans are such that you have a kitchen designer, this is something you might want to pursue. Last year I wrote a five-part blog series on this subject which is much too long to reproduce here, but if you're interested, you can click on the link at the bottom of this. In it, though, I explored all of this in some detailÂboth the reasoning for just dispensing with the cabinet above the hood, and some of the many solutions that are available to those who are enlightened enough to do something else with their kitchens. And, really, isn't the quest for something different one of the primary factors that motivates the many people coming to this forum? Comments (18)Wow great suggestions and thanks nosoccermom & kksmom for the photos Hollysprings I know you are right but DH and I would waste time & drive a designer CRAZY without doing research first (such as provided by this forum) because we are so opposite in our tastes. He loves a more traditional or rustic wood feel such as suggested by formulablues (islandlaurie's kitchen), while I am in agreement with kksmom and cawaps - I want the red stove to Pop against contrasting white or dark cabinets....so as suggested by Rosie and wagle, I'll keep searching for photos online. Comments (85)Ice, thanks for posting your lovely kitchen. I struggle with visualizing ideas, so it is really helpful! Funky, if we go with additional lighting I think you are right that the sconces are going to work better with the look and small space. It also makes a lot of sense to add a little additional light - it can always be turned down - and to have a couple lights that are task-specific or for mood. The artwork idea is so fun. I'm going to have to think about this! I also have that evil powder room wall, if I could find the right decoration. There's something terribly pleasing about having begun the kitchen planning with the thought, "Oh my, where am I going to put all my stuff? How is this ever going to work?" and to be drawing toward the conclusion and be thinking things like, "My storage plan around the range should be nothing, or art. Bbtrix, Thanks for hunting out this pictures for me. The style you pictured and the placement might look really good in this situation. The pulls are a kind of a strange color, "antique pewter," so maybe hard to match. The faucet is chrome and lighting fixtures in the dining area are currently dark bronze. So ... we're already getting patchworky, for better or worse. Here are the pulls - first is the stock photo, and the second is a photo I took when investigating flooring. (We're probably about to order the brown tile on the top.) The pull looks more silvery in direct light:...See MoreJeremy Woll with Lowes in Derby, Kansas
