Should all horticulturalists be qualified? College project
Comments (8)It depends on how one defines "horticulturist". To me, that term assigns a professional status all on its own. A "cowboy gardener" is unlikely to be a horticulturist as well as most landscapers/garden maintenance workers, heck even landscape designers. The title of horticulturist is much like that of botanist or chemist - it is granted to one who has made a study of horticulture (or botany or chemistry, etc.) and that implies a formal type of education and a depth of knowledge unique to that title. I do believe the industry could benefit from various types of certification programs depending on the participant's career path and primary job responsibilities. And in many cases, these certification programs DO exist, at least on a state by state basis (with a few national certification programs). But these are only effective if the general public or the consumers of these services are aware of them and insist on them being a factor in their hiring decisions. That's where the trade bodies become important........educating and informing their market that these certification programs and the qualifications that they endorse, whatever they are, are important and necessary hiring factors. btw, I've included a blog discussion of the appropriateness of the term 'horticulturalist' versus 'horticulturist'.....it's a quick, amusing read. And I don't know of any of my peers that refer to themselves as 'horticulturalists'......that typically implies a lack of familiarity with the profession :-)) Here is a link that might be useful: horticulturalist versus horticulturist...See MoreDS dropping out of college
Comments (72)My son had similar test results, but his processing speed isn't as low. His "diagnosis" was Non-verbal Learning Disorder ... which seems to cover a wide range of things that don't fit into other more common diagnoses. Medications were never recommended in our case. Luckily he has an incredible memory, so he is able to do well on school tests, but he loses points on basic assignments that he avoids doing. Regarding quack doctors ... one of the first docs we saw was a top, long term guy at Mass General. He was close to retiring. He met with my son for a whopping 10 minutes and wrote out a prescription for medication. I walked out of there and would have ripped up the prescription if my DH didn't stop me! From there we found the Hallowell Center where they did the extensive testing and suggested ways to help DS. As I said, no other doc has ever suggested medication. I'm very glad I didn't listen to that first "expert"....See MoreCollege Ideas for Our Daughter
Comments (46)Bestyears - You are so welcome. I must confess that I am thankful that I'm finally out of the college search process. All 3 of mine have finished college, one added an MBA, one went to law school and the third went Ivy League and is now an apprentice in stage production in Philly. If your DD ends up there I'm only about 20 minutes away - I'll met you in Center City for lunch! I've always liked Drexel although none of mine went there. My kids drew a circle around Philly and then looked for schools outside that area. Part of that is because their high school was fairly small - they had about 150 in their graduating classes and they wanted a broader life experience. But many of their classmates did graduate from Drexel and most of them enrolled in the co-op program. And for trips back to Texas - it's an easy commute to the airport. My brother lives in Houston and he used to fly up to visit our parents often. Even though I grew up on the other side of Penna. after living here for 30 years I've become an unabashed supporter of Philly. It's just so darned convenient. The Jersey shore is 60 miles away, New York City is 90 and there are several ski areas within a 2 hour drive. When my DD was at Columbia I'd hop the train and in 90 minutes I'd be in Manhattan and we'd met up for a day of shopping or a Broadway matinee or just lunch. I'm not sure where you are in Texas but we do get snow here!...See MoreDaughter's Room is Done! Now she can come home from college! ;)
Comments (12)Thanks, everyone! I did do the mountains myself and it wasn't that hard. I follow The Decorologist blog and she had a great step-by-step, along with the paint colors to use, so I didn't overthink it. :) I never even thought about a rug under the bed, Sina, that's a great idea. We are in Colorado so there are mountains everywhere, but I went to school in the Blue Ridge Mountains - love that....See MoreTed (Zone 4) IA
