Some Articles About Resin Coated Stone - Marble, Granite & Others

We have been shopping for a counter for a while and have done a ton of reading. Apparently from my reading something like 80% of the stone counter tops used today are coated with resin. Its supposed to fill in the pores, bring out the colors, seal and help smooth it out.

Contrary to what I had thought which was that granite and marble counters were quarried, cut to size and polished there is a lot more that goes on. The stone is sealed with a resin and is than sanded/polished. Lots of them have fiberglass mesh added to the bottom as well plus many are rodded to add strength.

People think they are buying so-called "all natural" stone but there is nothing natural about this. Basically the stone has been processed with synthetic materials ie. plastic by any other word. This does not mean its bad but I think its helpful are aware of what they are buying. Helps make a better educated consumer.
