Fancy/"front" door at garage entrance?
I had an idea in the shower yesterday morning, and it doesn't seem to be going away: What about putting an upgraded door between the garage and the house, either instead of or in addition to the front door?
It's the door the average homeowner uses most, so an aesthetic flourish might be extra appropriate here. Privacy and security are non-issues; not many perverts or prowlers will be peeking through any glass pieces (provided the garage door's closed). And at least in my floor plan, the garage entrance will be smack in the middle of the main living spaces -- visible almost all the time, I mean.
The one obvious downside is that, unless I leave a light on in the garage, any glass in the door will appear permanently dark. Not sure how much this bugs me.
Anybody else done something like this? Is my reasoning at least somewhat sound?

Comments (3)My parent's garage had two people doors to it. One on the back, next to the vehicle door, and one that opened up to the front porch very close to the front door. My mother didn't want it to be the same as the front door, but she didn't want to have this pretty front door and your average white door in the same "shot". And the white doors really seem to pop out with her brick. So, she made them the same finish, but the front door has glass details and the garage door doesn't. The other garage door is just white and matches the vehicle garage door. Unfortunately, I went through all my photos and looks like I don't have any that show the front and garage doors at the same time or really even after the brick was done. Comments (17)LOVE that garage door link! I forwarded it to my brother. One of his neighbors has a couple of dump trucks. I can just see the big yellow dump truck cross ways of his garage door. This is that same cheap-o door ... but in a lovely color. Imagine if you went a step further and added a pretty wreath and a pretty printed doormat. Or, if you have a window, some pretty curtains. You could make it nice without going full-fledged front-door ('cause, yeah, a front door does have a bigger price tag).
Serious question: You want a one-hour fire barrier door between the garage and the house ... so CAN you have a window in such a door?
My personal thoughts: I think pretty paint is enough ... but also put some thought into your view as you enter the house. I've been holding onto this inspiration picture from Sarah Richardson (don't we all love her?) forever, and I'm going to have something similar in our garage entryway. I'm scoootching the garage door from the edge to the middle of the wall so we'll walk into this area:

I agree with the thought, but if I understand the OP's idea, this door wouldn't be visible from the exterior of the house. It'd be between the garage and the house.
