Paint Design Dilemma Exterior

Paint & hardware advice needed for front door.

My front door needs a face lift, and I would appreciate advice. The house does not have shutters, so we have a lot of freedom. I am thinking dark green, like a Charleston green with brass hardware. Can I do polished brass lanterns as well, or will they weather badly? Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Hello hillarywaldron,

I like the concept of the green with your style home. And I do like the idea of brass lanterns just not in the polished brass. Go for an antique brass finish instead as I've shown.

You definitely need to power wash the house front and steps. And I'd eliminate the chair - it does nothing aesthetically. Get some large traditional planting urns and use mixed plantings (I've included an image for the concept).

I would also suggest a very traditional shutter style with latches- not louvered - as shown in the one image.

One other suggestion is adding a small portico. Even though your front door is recessed, the whole of your front facade is flat with no detail. A simple portico would add character and projection in one fell swoop, whereas the urn pediment detail you have now above the door isn't strong enough visually to carry the large house front, even if you add shutters.. You could still use the lights and urns, and then you can relocate your house numbers to the front of it.

Forest green will look pretty much as it does now because it is dark. Polished brass lanterns will tarnish, either quickly over the next year or slowly over the next few years. Big box store lanterns often don't have a good thick layer of brass plating covered with thick layers of clear finish to prevent tarnishing. Vastly more expensive polished brass lanterns will perform better long term.

Try a strong Wedgwood blue door and add some judicious pruning of your thriving foundation plants.

The door is obviously very sun/weather exposed. If it is very exposed, it might not have much stain remaining. I think I would paint the door. My stained mahogany door is somewhat recessed and does not get all the heat/rain weather that some do that are not recessed. I had a wood door years ago that was orange when I bought the house which I later painted black. It has been years ago but the paint lasted forever. I have been thinking of painting my door and have been very interested in the fine paints of Europe. Albeit expensive, I think if it lasts for years, it makes up for the initial cost. I think the squares are fine, as you have lots of them on the facade, from the panes of glass on the door to the shape of the windows, to the angular lines of the brick. Finish is very nice! I an not a fan of lever handles for exterior doors, but that is just me. I think they only belong on interior doors like closets and perhaps french interior doors.

IMO a better view of the whole front of the house would be helpful . I like the light but hate the storm door I really hides most of whatever door you choose and really not needed IMO if you go with a good insulated door and if you need the screen go with a phantom screen. You have already chosen to mix metals since IMO the light fixture and the house #s should have been the same color. I need to also see the patio right now all this is to me is a mish mash of stuff that I can't see working together.
