Room for just 1 container rose -- suggestions please?!?
Comments (23)Thanks to you both, Len and Jeri !! Jeri, does Baptiste Lafaye have much of a fragrance? I'm in email contact with Cliff Orent about that one, as well as Petite Francoise and Princesse Josephine-Charlotte, but I'm not yet clear about fragrance for any of those very beautiful roses. And Len, I agree about that name -- Angel Face! I almost didn't read up about it because the name was a bit too cutesy for my taste. Truth be told, I had a lesser-but-similar reaction to the "English Miss" name. But recognizing that that's a very silly reason not to learn about something, I checked into both roses, and they do seem like very nice roses, at least from what I've been able to learn about them, and both of them are noted as being "very," "intensely," or "exceptionally" fragrant. Sounds like your reading of The Ultimate Rose Book described EM as being "softly" fragrant, though, rather than something more potent ?? I wonder which one would have the better growth habit in a container, and quality as a cut rose. Any ideas on that front? Again -- thank you! Comments (30)Greenhouser: I use my GH as much for fish as plants and as most of them require soft, slightly acidic water, what comes out of the tanks makes a perfect watering compound for my gardenia. Otherwise, my tap water is pretty neutral, although every drop that goes into a tank is treated, and mixed with remineralized RO water. Otherwise, I fertilize my gardenia with Miracid, along with the evergreens in the foundation plantings. If you have chemicals in your tap water that may negatively affect your plants and need more for your aquariums than you may capture from rainwater, which, sad to say, may contain airbourne poisons anyway, check out the water conditioners sold for ponds. Don't waste money on the stuff sold for aquariums. The exact same products are sold in concentrated form for ponds at a 10th of the cost. Meaning; what takes a tsp. per 10 gal. in the aquarium version, needs only a single drop in the concentrated form. I don't grow orchids, but think it would be safe to believe that water in which Amazon fish will not only thrive but breed, would also keep orchids fourishing. Amazon water is soft and acidic from the leaves that fall into the water, releasing tannins. I'm curious now: as they grow up in rain forest trees; what, if any effect does the tannin in tree bark have on the rain water that suppots orchids in the wild?...See MoreCan I grow Gallicas in the South? Comments (20)Thanks to all who responded; since it is too hot here to mail order anything I can only look at my little Belle de Crecy and plan for next year and talk. Thanks for giving me the chance to learn. Ann- I forgot to say how much I liked your comment "none of this screaming magenta that sellers want to call purple." There is a lot of wishful thinking out there when it comes to colors - almost as much as with fragrance. Lynn- I hope they do well for you, but please let us know regardless. This is "zone pushing" from the other side. Melva- Thanks for the information. What is "Rush Family?" I couldn't find it on HMF - is it a found rose? Olga- I see now why Michael made the comment he did. Wow! (Perhaps it is best that I can't order right now after seeing that list.) I hope some of you will post full bush shots when your roses are in bloom. Elizabeth...See MoreTell me about your most continuous bloomer.
Comments (33)What else can I say, you all are blessed! All the roses mentioned are barely blooming for me. Just been too hot. My climate stinks. Spring lasted for one week, followed by a 16F late freeze which killed everything to the ground except for the hardiest stuff (Kordesii blood) and then 95F to 100F weather came right after that along with midges. Then the Japanese beetles. I've had no roses this year from over 200 bushes. My Peppermint Pop is certainly not blooming at all, just barely hanging onto dear life. The only bloomer now is Carefree Beauty. Quadra which normally blooms a lot just had a spring flush and literally quit growing. It seems to be resuming now. Julia Child is not blooming either. Terrible season!...See More- 6 years ago
