Area rug ...maybe...or maybe not...family room help?

I was thinking about getting an area rug for my family room but I really need help with placement of furniture. I did include several pictures in the comments. The first 2 pics, I put the chaise next to the love seat but the opposite side of the room was so empty, I put a manicure table just to put something there in the second pic. I'm thinking the last 2 pics, my furniture looks more spacious and a bit better, but how do I incorporate an area rug with the furniture being so far away?

I also think I would also angle the furniture, if possible. It would be helpful to see a floor plan.

The chaise should not be next to the door, as it looks like the door would hit it when it is completely open.

If the room is big enough, the area right in front of the door could be the foyer, but I cannot tell what traffic paths you have in this room.

Can you post a photo that gives us a sense of the entire space: a to-scale drawing would be really helpful.

You don't have to line furniture up against a wall. You can angle it. A rug can be angled too, or used to create a sense of cohesion, you can center your furniture around a rug floating in a room.

A rug is best sized to the ROOM, not just a seating area.. Appears ( as it is 8 x 10 you have now) you need at least a 12 x 16 rug to be proportional to the room. You can have anything you like created from broadloom, ( customized to the inch ) which is now GEARED to doing just that, with wonderful patterns and textures. Every broadloom maker knows the world is full of hardwood floors and generous rooms. Go to a good carpet store, It's not an online creation. You want that sectional completely on a rug..... and with a consideration of other seating added at some point, near the hearth. A too small rug chops and clutters a room. We know the flooring is there : )

You have beautiful hardwood floors. I don't think you need a rug where you have the gray one currently. Look for one larger, multicolor rug for the seating area that combines the warmth of your floors and the grey of the furniture. Maybe even with a bit of the blue from your room above the steps.

I'd get a very large rug that covers most of the floor and then face the furniture toward the TV. Can you put the couch against the middle of the wall that has the chaise now?

I hate to have you take more pics, but what i think would be helpful is if you stand at the front door - at least I think it’s the front door between the two windows? - and take a shot toward the left wall, then take a pic toward the middle of the room, and then toward the right. Those three photos should allow us to see the whole space. We can’t see very well how the whole space lays out with the current photos. At least I can’t! ;)

if you don’t want to do that, the float your couch away from the wall and angled so that it’s in front of the fireplace. Does your space allow that? The size and layout of your room may be such that the couch and chaise won’t both work. But we can give it a shot!
