Length and width of a kitchen island?
Comments (5)Ours is also 39" (36 cabs plus overhang) and about 63" long. It's a very nice size, with a prep sink and plenty of work room alongside, although with a bit more length I'd have probably gone for a larger sink than the 15" wide we have. There was room to set it in a few inches from the end, though, to avoid splashing on the floor and to allow that edge to hold a cup or something briefly. If the island were 36" deep, I doubt I'd miss the space as far as prep is concerned. How about propping up a piece of cardboard and playing at working and walking around it? That's what I did....See MoreRange in island? Newbie help, pleeease
Comments (12)Springroz, welcome to the kitchen forum! Sounds like the house will eventually go thru but the negotiations can take what feels like an eternity. We came from a house like you had with a Jenn-Air on the island and loved it for the same reasons you stated. When we bought our current house we figured we gave up our dream kitchen forever but after a LOT of design work we have something that will be better yet. For quite some time thru the design process we were adament on having the range on the island. We didn't want to give up something we had such fond memories of. The island was 9' by 4' with no prep sink. When we examined carefully why we used the island so much it was only then that we were able to give up the range on island only to come out with a layout the we are ecstatic about! You may have seen threads that show a 70% prep, 20% cleanup, 10% cooking. We wrongfully concluded the island cooktop was why we spent the majority of our time using the island. On reflection of our island cooktop we saw that even though our prep area was on the island it had little to do with the cooktop and a LOT to do with the openess. Logically our prep area should have been by another larger counter by the sink but that was very closed off. We'd move whatever we needed to the island just to have the openess and prep where we could be near others. Our current layout will have the prep on the island where 90% of the time I will be prepping (chopping veggies, making sandwhiches, mixing drinks, putting away groceries cleaning the kitchen, washing pans. Could I have the range on the island too yes, but I would have had to shell out big $$$ to have an efficient vent or put up with the downdrafts and you know they don't work as well. Do you have a ballpark of what the size island will be? Besides all of what I said above the ones that HATE their island cooktops are those where the island is too small. I'm sure the design gerus here will give you the stats on minimum space but I encourage you to really reflect why you want the range on the island....See MoreEnd table length and width for adjacent love seats

Comments (7)Ron thanks for the electrical education. It makes sense now. My uppers for the long piece are 36" + 16" BUT the cabinets are flat at the bottom for lack of a better word. My valence is a separate piece at the front screwed into the cabinets underneath. Both pictures below show my setup but the backsplash, valence and microwave are in. The pieces hanging out was my old under cabinet lighting which you can see was only 18" relative to the 30" wide cabinet above. The other under cabinet light is hidden behind the wall in the 2nd picture....See Morekazmom
