Did you save your lovely old rose from the backhoe? If it's flowering so well and is healthy why on earth destroy it? As the others say, it could easily be tidied up and pruned back into shape - easier to work with a robust rose that's obviously thriving in your climate with little care, than start again with something new that you may have to labour over...(Sorry, just my opinion).... Yes it looks as if it may be a rugosa or something with a bit of rugosa in it; I didn't know Hansa grew that big but others would know better. Does it smell sort of warm/clove-like? If it is H. you have yourself a very good rose that will be easy to care for in the future, once you've got it back under control. And there should be gorgeous big decorative hips in Autumn (Fall), from which you can make all sorts of wondrous old-time things like Rosehip Jelly and Tea. That's after you've finished bottling up the Rosepetal Jam, of course! :-D Seriously, you have to watch these men with their machines, they have to be spoken to very firmly, in my experience. I once had a neighbour who offered to come round to my place with his chainsaw and cut everything - trees, shrubs, everything - down to four foot high. He said it would look much neater. Honestly, they have no idea at all! (No offence to all the lovely sensitive blokes out there) LOL :-)

Yes, it would be fine to prune back the side sticking into the walkway. That plant looks quite large and healthy and shouldn't have any problems losing a little at this time of year. I would leave the rest of the plant alone then until next spring. In the early spring, around the time the forsythias bloom, you can do a hard prune if you wish. It will grow back, I assure you! Knock Outs are very tough and hardy and should need very little fussy care. Water and a little fertilizer once in a while is all you need to do. If you wish you can dead head the spent blooms. That will sometimes make it rebloom a little quicker. Otherwise, they pretty much do their own thing.

Immediately I thought of my yellow rose "Anthony Meilland", I think they look very similar. Am no expert on identifying roses in any way or form. It's hard for me to see if yours has the pointy petals though. The blooms on mine will blow pretty quickly, in a day or two, but it's constantly pumping out new, shiny flowers so you barely notice. I don't notice any particular scent from it.

Yep I think your right the pics I'm finding definitely look like the original plant. Looks like it's also commonly called "Golden Privet" and unfortunately is also on the invasive list for my area. It was also planted in an inappropriate spot for it's mature size. It's right beside the edge of the porch. I don't think that's a good place for an 8ft shrub. I'll probably just cut it to the ground and smoother it out this year and replace it with one of the large peonies like Big Ben or Bowl of Beauty.
