Name That Rose!

Please Help with Rose Bush Identification

Hello Everyone, we recently purchased a new property that has a very large and unkempt rose bush. They look like the typical rose bush that you find on old farms in my zone (3). I don't know what it's called. It has such pretty blooms, but I'm afraid that my husband is planning on ripping it out with the backhoe this weekend since it's so unruly. I'm not sure if I want to keep it or start fresh, it has hundreds of blooms, ad I think it will be nice again with some care....but I just don't know. The blooms are very fragrant and do seem larger than normal, almost double in appearance. I appreciate any help you can offer. (I have not had a change to do any kind of pruning on it this year)

Thank you to Lance who looked at the photos (see Gallery) and suggested this might be a hybrid bourbon, "...most likely it would be one of the types which are gallica/bourbon crosses." Any thoughts from others in the forum? Thank you--

How much water is it receiving? Looks healthy fo me. Look on underside of yellowing leaves for any black dots, which could indicate the start of a fungal disease called black spot. You can remove those leaves & any fallen leaves below the rose. to prevent the spores from reinfecting the plant. Also apply mulch around your roses. This helps prevent fungal spores found naturally in the soil from splashing upward when it rains or you water. The mulch also acts as a weed block and decreases watering requirements by keeping the soil below moist. Use about a 3” layer. Don’t pile the mulch against the canes either.

Yes, it probably is black spot. You could spray for it but it won't kill them and they're probably setting up for dormancy in your zone anyway so I wouldn't bother. As far as what to do for them, if they're growing and blooming well just leave them be. In the early spring when they begin to wake up you can cut out any dead wood but if they're once blooming you don't want to cut them back or you'll cut off that years blooms. If you want to shape them wait until they are done blooming next year and cut them back then. But remember cutting them will encourage them to grow more and that new growth is what your bloom for the NEXT year will be on. On some of these roses it's very hard to tell if a cane is dead or not so be very careful. Look at the base of the plant and find the ones you think are dead but before you cut them follow the canes all the way up to the tips and look for new growth beginning. If you see those green or red nubs along the canes starting to fatten or bud out then the cane is still alive. If it looks dead all the way to the tip snip off a short length first and look at the inside of the cane. If the center (pith) is brown or a dark tan it's dead. Clip a little lower and continue to clip down in short segments until you find a white or pale creamy color in the center. That is good live cane. If you get down near the bottom and there is no white pith then you can cut that cane off at the ground. With some practice you'll get the hang of it quickly. I don't know how much winter die back you get on these roses in your zone but any dead wood can be taken off at any time of year with out doing any harm. It's just usually easier to do it in the spring when you don't have all the leaves on them and you can see the canes better.

I can't say what it is, although it does look familiar and I would guess that it is a heritage variety. I think it might be an old garden rose? I'm not sure I'm outside Thunder Bay Ontario in zone 3 a. There are a lot of dead canes that need to be cleaned up if we are to keep it. We bought a place that had a neglected yard with overgrown shrubs that is why we are using the backhoe to rip everything out. I'd like to save some bushes that are worth saving. This bush is about 6-8 ft high and about 10 feet wide.

It is one of the Rugosas....a likely candidate would be 'Hansa' given its hardiness.

It would be a terrible shame to destroy that beautiful rose! It can be cut back and tamed instead of ripped out. Besides, anything that can survive your brutal winters deserves to live!

Did you save your lovely old rose from the backhoe? If it's flowering so well and is healthy why on earth destroy it? As the others say, it could easily be tidied up and pruned back into shape - easier to work with a robust rose that's obviously thriving in your climate with little care, than start again with something new that you may have to labour over...(Sorry, just my opinion).... Yes it looks as if it may be a rugosa or something with a bit of rugosa in it; I didn't know Hansa grew that big but others would know better. Does it smell sort of warm/clove-like? If it is H. you have yourself a very good rose that will be easy to care for in the future, once you've got it back under control. And there should be gorgeous big decorative hips in Autumn (Fall), from which you can make all sorts of wondrous old-time things like Rosehip Jelly and Tea. That's after you've finished bottling up the Rosepetal Jam, of course! :-D Seriously, you have to watch these men with their machines, they have to be spoken to very firmly, in my experience. I once had a neighbour who offered to come round to my place with his chainsaw and cut everything - trees, shrubs, everything - down to four foot high. He said it would look much neater. Honestly, they have no idea at all! (No offence to all the lovely sensitive blokes out there) LOL :-)
