Seeking A Replacement (Suggestions Welcome)
Comments (18)Brad, Crossandra is a beautiful plant w/orange flowers. IMO, it's difficult. The blooms are gorgeous, if it blooms indoors..lol..I had a couple, both died. However, the last was purchased more than 15 yrs ago, haven't seen one for sale since. Did you find an online nursery that sells Crosandras? Easy to grow? In HI..lol.. How bright is your SE window in summer? Spider, Pothos and Philos would do fine during winter, but if your south gets harsh summer sun, keep an eye out. You don't want a scorched plant. Snakes, 'Sans' will grow in any light including shade, but medium light is best. How did your COT die, Brad?..It's possibly not your fault. HD occassionaly sells COT's. IT never fails. COT's is a succulent, not meant to sit in water. HD;s COT's pots are wrapped in aluminum foil. God only knows the number of people who water..Water sits on the bottom, and roots rot. The last time I was browsing, I almost passed out..the smell was horrible..stagnant water. I complained to the manager..what a farce! I hope you find something nice..Toni...See MoreReplacement window style for Dutch Colonial?
Comments (5)Yes, that's part of our dilemma... people seem to do just about everything (leading me to think it probably doesn't matter if we change from what's here!) and there are very few original Dutch Colonials in our 300+ year old town (plenty of old saltboxes and traditional colonials, but no "old" Dutch colonials and only a smattering of 20th century ones, those mostly builder models that have a gambrel roof and dormers but that's as far as the similarity goes. Someone told me the other day, when I asked the same question about architectural "integrity" of the window style, "well, if yours was built in 1959, it's pretty much a fraud already, isn't it?" :) Which is true, of course, so perhaps I just shouldn't sweat it. The increased light (from going to lower sashes with no divided lites) would be welcome, and we don't DISLIKE the look from the street -- we just weren't sure if others would find it an odd look. Most people (including realtors and the town assessor) refer to it as a "Cape" but I think that's primarily because from the street, it resembles one, with its dormers and low roof line. But from the end of the house, where you see the curved flare of the very deep eaves, the gambrel roofline, the chimney centered on the end of the house, it is clearly a Dutch colonial. So mostly, I just wondered if there was any sort of standard for the window style, or if the pragmatic Dutch did whatever was (a) cost effective and (b) practical for a given site (and I should do the same!)...See Morecasement window replacement suggestion?
Comments (5)Not sure how he arrived at that "cracked frame indicates water" without a more detailed examination of the exterior. That being said, to say that water is getting into a Pella clad window is certainly a safe bet and playing the percentages. I would not replace 1 casement with another unit adjacent. Unless the windows are of the exact same style and model, it will look funky. I would do a full assessment of all of the windows and see if these problems are not indicative of other issues being experienced by the other windows. If your project is going to necessitate that you replace a bunch of units, that may have some impact on product selection. I do agree that something with a less moisture sensitive exterior (i.e. fiberglass or vinyl vs. clad wood) might be a better way to go at this point. There are plenty of great wood windows out there, but even the best only come with a 10 year warranty and will come at a definite premium over fiberglass or vinyl. Just depends on what sort of interior/aesthetic look you are going for....See MoreWhat style of replacement window to use on remodel
Comments (4)Oh yes, DH here means Dear Husband:) Sorry to mix window language here with reference to my hubs! We since found out from an addendum to our HOA bylaws that sliders are not permitted due to the "colonial aesthetic" the HOA is trying to maintain. So, we are leaning towards double hung, just like you suggested, Windows on Washington. So, thank you! Any insights about Milguard or cautions or advice on vinyl windows in general would be greatly appreciated....See Moreivy333dale
