Area rug placement
Comments (4)As someone who has very oddly shaped rooms and therefore has, out of necessity, broken every single rug rule without a picture I'd be inclined to go 4x6. I don't have an issue with the rug being under the bed, but I'm not a fan of case goods half on and half off a rug. And, there should be some floor exposed beyond the threshold before you get to the rug. But I retain the right to change my mind when we see pictures, okay?...See MoreNeed help on area rug sizing and placement for large space
Comments (13)Esmaili Rugs and Antiques, Inc. ingrid_vc so. CA zone 9 I like the light colored one best I think... and I definitely want a modern pattern. I found a local retailer who can do custom size rugs (even custom variations of rug patterns in store with colors we match / pick out). I checked this one out. Was thinking I could even change the black to blue? But I kind of like the black for contrast. Or is that too many colors? Or should I go for more COLOR? I need COLOR IN MY LIFE! But, I could do that with pillows, art, and accessories..... ? I am planning on doing automatic shades, not drapes, in this room.. prob neutral so won't add much color. Also, don't mind the outdoor furniture that's all bunched up against the window... and I just put the orange pillows on the sofa to try and get some color going for reference. You all are so much help!...See MoreDesperate area rug placement
Comments (19)So many great comments/advice to come home to! Thank you all very much. Helps a lot- especially since I don't speak French at the moment, so just having some "conversation" in English feels good. I'm gathering that my issue about the rug is really an overall issue regarding the configuration of (possibly) all my furniture? As I'm sure everyone knows pictures are really poor at showing space and it's my own fault and lack of math skills that I'm unable to provide dimensions. I think I found an app that can use the camera to calculate square space- I'll try it. But: I DID try to float the couch in a few spaces to no avail however never facing the window wall- great idea. Just using my tape measure now I can see if I do so, I'll need to move the piano. Yeah, it's a big heavy, smelly, old, but beautiful sounding piano- I'm pleasantly stuck with. The book case is awful, I know, it's my 4yr olds- but great idea for a stand. For sure if I move one piece, I move all- but it's worth a try. It's a bit of a puzzle dealing with the heater, lack of outlets, access to tv, and this massive couch. Question: If I'm forced to stay in this position is the area rug really a bad touch? I've never seen an area rug coming from underneath a couch- between the legs. I can't tell if it's a good rule to break here. Thank you again!...See MoreFurniture choice and placement for odd and open living room
Comments (10)The room seems big, but so much of the perimeter is kind of useless as a location for new seating. Casegoods could fill some of those voids visually, especially opposite the FP where you need a large counter balancing piece like a bookcase and then some large art in the stairwell. I would plan to ground the seating on a large rug. You can tape out some versions for size using the stair railing and fireplace as your boundaries while aligning the rug to some of the windows. The sofa would have its back to the stairwell end of the room. Two chairs would sit where your large sofa is now and, if you do the 4 swivel chair arrangement, two would sit with their backs to the upper landing. Three boys and a dog need space to run around and play, as you said. That's why I suggested smaller scale furniture that would leave some more floor space....See MoreCarrie B
