Area rug placement

Hi!

I have a rectangular shaped bedroom (15' wide x 8.5' long). The door opens as far to the right of the room (facing into the room) as possible. You're facing, on the far wall (from right to left): a large dresser, a night table, a queen size bed, and a small dresser. There is about 2' of space between the foot of the bed and the wall. There is nothing on the door wall.

I want to get an area rug to fill the space (hardwood floor) when you walk into the room. That space is about 7 feet wide x almost 7 feet long.

Here is where my bf and I disagree. He wants to get a 4' x 6" rug, which would be centered (shorter side nearest the doorway) in the space. He's under the impression that no part of the rug should go under the surrounding furniture. But I think we should get a larger one (@ 5' x 7'). Meaning I would step on to it when I got out of bed. Some of it would have to go under the bed and some under the dresser. And it would come almost to the threshold of the doorway.

Opinions? BTW, it will be a patterned low-pile rug.

P.S. I thought of getting a giganto rug that would fill most of the room, but I don't treasure the thought of constantly vacuuming under the bed.

Can you post pictures?

(As a note, I think you'll find that with no rug, you'll get more dust bunnies under the bed. A dust skirt to the floor helps considerably with that, with or without a rug.)

Hi Julie, I arrived home from visiting my daughter in Austin this past weekend! I thought about looking you several times as I was noticing the Austin Stone. Quite a variety of shades and sizes. I saw some near the homes of Zilker Botanical Gardens that was lovely. I will keep looking for chairs but am am hosing two large gatherings in mid to late October that I could use them for. Have not looked anymore on the pictures. There is one local artist that I like his work but have not contacted him yet. I was wondering if I could do a collection of three or four large pictures instead of one large canvas. The one canvas seemed overwhelming to me but I did try to embrace it. I am looking forward to adding the bright & bold colors into the room.

I prefer the second rug layout. It's a gracious entryway so it's nice to have the rug fill the space a bit more, plus you always want to give breathing room around a rug rather than squishing it up against a wall or piece of furniture. We generally steer clear of light toned entry rugs for practical reasons so you may want to consider that. And lastly, a flat weave rug is more suitable for a space like this than a cut pile, which is what your rug appears to be (maybe I'm reading the images incorrectly?). They're more durable and easier to clean.

hey all, let me clarify. this is our master bedroom sitting room so just for my husband and me. I do have a lazboy recliner arriving in a month or so. my husband has yet to buy his (he's very picky). we have the round side tables that we may or may not use. I was thinking of putting the recliners on the left side kinda of facing the TV (so crooked). because of the odd layout with the angle of the fireplace and the tv currently above it, I haven't been sure of what shape rug to get. only because of the weird angle. everything else I can figure out. don't mind the mess of baby things, please. we moved here over the summer and this room has been useless so it's been casual storage for our baby who rooms with us right now. I want to create this room to be a warm-neutral space and I don't care for hardwoods so I wanted the largest rug I could get for this odd space but not sure what is appropriate.

You could do a custom size and shape. I don't have experience with the site I posted below but it gives you an idea of what can be done. Otherwise you can shop a local carpet store as I'm sure they offer this service, too. And don't forget to look at remnants if the carpet store offers them as they can be bounded, too. As someone who has very oddly shaped rooms and therefore has, out of necessity, broken every single rug rule without a picture I'd be inclined to go 4x6. I don't have an issue with the rug being under the bed, but I'm not a fan of case goods half on and half off a rug. And, there should be some floor exposed beyond the threshold before you get to the rug.

But I retain the right to change my mind when we see pictures, okay?

One of my bedrooms is similar to your's, and we use a 4x6 with no furniture on it. It looks great. Although the other rugs in my rooms are "grounded" by some parts of furniture, I'm also one of those who don't think it's necessary to follow the Rug Rules. lol.

My vote is 4x6.
