New Rug, Please help me.
Comments (33)Agree with everyone, that rug is really gorgeous in your room. Getting a rug that you can slip in to a room that is already decorating is not easy, normally the rug is the first thing you buy and then decorate around it, so I would say you've done an excellent job. I can understand if you want to tweak the chair colors but they look nice as they are. Maybe if you live with it all for a little bit it'll grow on you. The room is beautiful, I love all your little touches. I also like the black border. They say every room needs a little bit of black. Back to the rug, is the rug hand knotted or is it one that has the canvas cover in back? I just want to warn you about the canvas backed kind. I did buy one like that, it was a Couristan rug. I know the one under your dining table isn't that brand. Anyway, this was the first Couristan I bought. It was the kind with that canvas cover on back. The cover is there because wool is not actually knotted, it's more "punched" into place. They glue the cover on to hold the pile firmly. Apparently, what happens with those rugs (and it happened to mine) was that SOMETIMES the glue and the backing deteriorate. With ours, I was noticing all kinds of dust in the room. There was also this "off" smell. When I finally got in there and lifted the rug to clean it there was a powdery substance collected in the grooves of the floorboards under the rug. I thought maybe the kids were up to something and vacuumed it up but it happened several times before I realized it wasn't chalk dust or something the kids did. I know some Pottery Barn rugs have had this problem in the past, maybe they've improved. Anyway, ultimately I threw the rug away. Again, this may not be how your new beauty is made but just wanted to mention it....See MorePlease help with the rug placement
Comments (4)I would move the rug a few inches toward the window and about 2 feet toward the sectional so the rug edge is just underneath the front edges of the main part of the sectional. That will also give you a good walkway from your stairs at the other end of the room so you aren't walking on the edge of the rug (like in your last photo). The rug colors will be beautiful with your fabric. Post a photo when your furniture comes in....See MoreDoes this Rug Placement Work?
Comments (32)I probably owe everyone an update to the thread. We're not done with the space yet. And as some folks pointed out, we probably under any circumstances have a little too much going on here in terms of function to have a totally "pulled together" look. But here's what we have now with a few of the ideas discussed upthread. 1. We flipped the piano. 2. We added a chair for sitting (currently experimenting with two chairs from other places in the house - we could use one of these, or buy a new chair) 3. We added pretty storage baskets for the kids' flotsam and jetsam. 4. I kept the rug - it seems to make things more comfortable for the kids, it seems to warm up the space, and it hooks into some of the other warm colors in the space. 5. We're not sure what do with the art / possible window treatment, but we're experimenting with the mantel and for now I tried pulling the existing art into a tighter grouping at least. (The kids added some summer artwork too - not permanent.) Anyway, it's maybe not great, but I wanted to come back and say some of the suggestions made here seem to be offer some improvement and some steps in a direction. I think the baskets helped a lot! The room is perhaps a little busy, but I kind of like all the layered textures / repeating colors, and it feels cozier. For the kids, there's a lot of places to "go" in there - and they're spending a lot of time here thanks for school in our area being 100 percent virtual through at least January. It's really turning into the kids playroom / study, so maybe that's theme I need to keep trying to emphasize. With chair / basket combo 1 With chair/basket combo 2 View from the other line of approach to that room:...See MoreNeed help picking out rug and curtains to match new furniture
Comments (9)my daughter has similar chair and grey sectional...she has windows just like yours! She did a navy and white wide horizontal stripe. She got them on sale at Target I think, 5 panels and they are the shorter length and she hung them on a one inch diameter rod and they stop right at the bottom of the window, the rod is between the ceiling and the window top and are about 5 inches beyond the windows on each end...they look so cool and since they are not hitting the floor they hang nice and straight.......the sofa is in front of the window too,...See MoreOlychick
