Gray has an undertone of green, purple or blue... best to match those with the surrounding colors. Maria Killam (of Colour me Happy blog) has a few rules for selecting gray shades. She is working out of Canada, but translation for the paint names should be available. If you look closely at this kitchen (above) the stone countertop and flooring and subway tile have a green undertone while the interior panels of the doors have been painted a blue-gray. It's subtle and doesn't look necessarily wrong (to the untrained eye) but can you see it now that I'm describing the difference? Most people can. I always do that and then click "more results from ths.gardenweb.com" so I don't have to remember site:ths.gardenweb.com. BTW, I left off the BM because sometimes people spell it out and sometimes they abbreviate. Glad I was able to help a bit. I'm contemplating gray cabinets and loved seeing another example. Favorite go-to exterior color plan is to pull the color from the mortar for the body of the house - or as close to matching the mortar color as you can get. It's neutral and guaranteed to work with what you've got. For the trim, tell your painter/paint mixer person that you want the same mortar-inspired body color **BUT** several shades lighter or darker - your choice. I'd probably go lighter. It's simple, I know, but it's easy for anybody to execute and you end up with curb appeal that's tasteful, cohesive and pulled together.

As SR said... Classic Gray looks totally different depending on the time of day, lighting, etc. We were definitely paranoid about going too dark but haven’t found it to be dark in our space (still finishing so don’t have any good pics). If you think you want to go lighter maybe check out BM Simply White, that’s another lovely color. I must have tried 50 different whites (what it felt like anyway, lol) before finding that one... Light & bright without being stark. I think Beth used that color in some of her living areas and it looks beautiful (could prob find pics on here of those). We used it for trim & ceilings and classic gray for walls.
