Anyone used travel insurance before?
Comments (15)We have an annual family plan that we purchase through our credit card provider (Canadian). It ends up costing less than a per trip purchase and you don't have the problem of having X days to buy the insurance after booking your trip (after all, you can't book hotels until you have your flights etc. - gets very convoluted). But I do know of one small travel agency that on a weekly basis had many customers trying to get refunds for trips on which they had declined travel insurance - but say broke an ankle the day before leaving (changing a light bulb), had a death in the family etc. - but it was too late. I do get annoyed though that the travel insurance does not cover incidents caused by strikes - say you can't make it to the airport because of a labour disruption - they won't pay. Or for Acts of God....See MoreLet's talk about travel insurance
Comments (28)Very timely. Maire. I just bought my insurance for my Greece trip yesterday. I have learned that the sooner you buy the insurance the better. Ideally, I should have bought it as soon as I made my first payment for the trip. I'm also planning a trip to Spain and Portugal next year and I should have bought the insurance for that trip right away but did not. I bought a policy from CSA -- their Basic plan for my trip to Greece. I used Insuremytrip.com to make the purchase and also checked out Squaremouth.com. Both are reliable sites and very helpful. I recently spent four days in Canada and even bought health insurance for that trip. It only cost $18. I know Medicare would not cover me. On the flight there, a man in the seat behind us became violently ill. It was horrifying! He kept saying "I think I am dying". Then he said his daughter had had a 24 hour flu and his symptoms suggested he may have caught it. He was white as a sheet and burning with fever as well as having intestinal problems. Of course we freaked when we realized it could be contagious. So, I was VERY glad to be covered although we did not catch it. Great article. I really like Rick Steves. I will pass it along to my traveling companions. Thanks....See MoreCan you reconcile Medicare acct like you do regular insurance acct?
Comments (53)In prior years, the medical deduction was limited to the only the expense amount in excess of either 7.5% or 10% of adjusted gross income (I forget which). So people needed to have some combination of low income and relatively high medical expenses to get any deduction for medical costs. Starting in 2018, the federal standard deduction will be $12K for single filers and $24K for joint returns. With the state tax deduction haircut to $10K in total and the same continuing limit on medical expenses, far fewer people will be itemizing deductions on their federal returns. For many people's state income taxes, changes corresponding to these federal changes have not been made and many may have a federal standard deduction while still itemizing for state taxes. I expect that when we have regime change in the US, the tax rules will be changed to revert to something closer to what they were before this latest round of nonsensical and deficit bloating changes. The upshot is that even for those who did deduct medical expenses (and insurance premiums) in prior years, far fewer will do so in the future. If there's no deduction for the current year (which you'll see when your return is prepared), there's no need to keep bills and correspondence beyond when each individual claim has been resolved....See MoreDo I need to buy Owner's Title Insurance for a vacant lot/land?
Comments (11)Make sure you get a survey too even though you are paying cash. You want to know exactly what you are buying and in order to remove MANY title exceptions, you need a survey. Since you plan to build anyway, you will need a survey. Survey's are good for a long time. I think 10 years but it could be longer. Read the title commitment too. Make sure you read the entire commitment and ask for the cover of the title insurance policy to review because that is where the standard conditions are in addition to Exhibits A and B. Make sure you understand the exceptions. Make sure the title company removes the survey restrictions prior to closing if you get the survey. I have seen title companies fail to do that and it is not a good thing. Best advice above...get an attorney to represent you in this purchase. Another inexpensive solution to the problem of "you don't know what you don't know"....See MoreLars
