Travel Insurance for travelling to the US
Comments (6)jasdip - it is getting that I am afraid to leave Ontario. (I live in Toronto.) We have an annual multi-trip out of country/provincial medical/trip cancellation policy that is not cheap - and renews every Sept. I am well aware that each province pays differently - and we are under 65 - not by a lot though - just off. A change in medication - even if you are run over by a bus, can result in the company not paying. It makes absolutely no sense. We also have extra life insurance through the company noted in the Marketplace expose - funny, I never watch Marketplace and neither do many of the people we know, but I guess everyone was flipping chanels and everyone saw it. It is very true - I have seen their medical form since they send it every year trying to sell us more insurance - my doctor wouldn't be able to fill it out. And if you call, as the program pointed out, you do not speak with a licensed insurance rep - you get someone who has absolutely no idea what would happen if you died of something totally unrelated to something they think you "lied" about. One section asks if you have experienced - even once - basic things - a migraine, a UTI etc. So what, you were run over because you might have had a headache? Hard to lie when you didn't even know about something. Same with the travel plan - what do you do, call them and report if you have to take Sinus meds for 6 days? Or you are given painkillers due to a root canal? I know someone who was told when she purchased private insurance that birth control pills were a pre-existing condition so would not be covered. Then there is me - I have been called - AGAIN - as a potential juror for a FIRST DEGREE (wonderful) murder trial. The insurance company tried to tell me last time that jury duty was a pre-existing condition - that one I won. But I am appalled that I might be called for a 6 - 8 week trial - my dog would have to be boarded - and I wouldn't receive any $$$ for the first 10 days of sitting plus the 5 days while they pick the jury. Even taking public transportation alone would cost about $105.00 - before the cost of boarding our older dog - or sending him to daycare. There is something wrong with our system. And I almost bought a cheap ticket to NY on the day the jury notice arrived - 10 minutes before - but the AC website crashed. Just as well, because the insurer allows 14 days from date of the summons to cover the cost of a ticket - it took 18 days for it to get here. The person did believe me - but he told me that claims would have given me a very hard time. Last time I was given only 5 days' notice and they wouldn't let me out of it and I had a plane ticket. My husband is also on the rotation - yet so many people have never been called - and others have been excused for the most frivolous of reasons - while others with very legitimate reasons have to serve. At least pay me my costs. Once the $40 a day kicks in in week 3, that would have to be taken into income. Can't win! I would hate to be an honest banker on trial - or someone with money. Last time I wore a suit and was accused of being a lawyer - unfortunately I am not so had to stay as well as a "sneak in a suit". Many people were there in Joe Boxer PJs and slippers. When my husband served the person responsible for filling Ontario juries wrote an article for the paper reading that jury panels do not have a proper demographic because too many people get out of it leaving only those with a similar mind set. On the news there was an interview with the public defender for a murder trial - jury selection started this week. He said that the best jurors are construction or trade workers because they are much more independent thinkers? What was he smoking? Some provinces pay everyone the equivalent of UIC from day one -that we need. This will cost us our vacation....See MoreLet's talk about something else...
Comments (6)My wife, four girls, and I had our six bedroom rented home burn down 4 months ago. We had no renters insurance and lost just about eveything. Thanks to the wonderful people in the surronding community rallying to our aide we were capable of moving into a nice big 5 bedroom victorian style home in Camden Ny. The owner had closed on this HUD home the same day we signed our four month lease. Seemingly a Godsend, the day after he recieved the deed to the home he put it on the market and expects us to show it for him. I guess the term lonterm tennants means four months instead of four years as he led us to believe. We have lived in two large homes now in upstate ny now for over five years. Our fuel bills this year have ranged from $800. to $1200. a month and prior years the same depending on OPEC ofcourse. This has ruined us financially and limits our options so we have considered the prospect of buying a cheap old 3 bedroom single wide mobile home reducing these ungodly fuel costs and doing away with snake in the grass landlords. A this point we are quite optimistic at this option and Any advice on our situation would be greatly appreciated. thank you and God bless...See MoreLet's talk about our best friends.
Comments (27)My best friends are the girls I have known since childhood. Vicki, Kathy, Mary, Marilyn and Donna. Mary lived next door, Vicki and Kathy down the block, Marilyn around the corner and Donna I met the first day of Grade 9. She was the only one in the class who had a dress on. LOL I am close to all of them but they aren't necessarily close with each other. Vicki and I are close, Kathy and I are close, Marilyn and Mary are close, Kathy is Godmother to Mary's oldest. Marilyn has been close to each of us at different times but we all get along and a few times a year Mary has all of us over and sometimes Mary will only have Vicki, Kathy and I over. I spend most of my time with Vicki, Kathy and Donna. Vicki was with me at my Mom's bedside when she passed away and held my Mom's hand. Kathy's Mom just passed away a few weeks ago and I was really close to Kathy's Mom. Kathy's Dad called me his "adopted daughter" after my own Dad passed away. Kathy would say I was closer to her Dad than she was. He liked to tell stories and I liked to listen. LOL Mary's Mom is 91 years old and when she sold her house next door I missed her terribly. She is still going strong and I talked with her last week at Kathy's Mom's funeral. Donna knows Kathy from Grade school and knows Vicki through me. They are just acquaintances and know each other through me. Vicki's Mom used to be friends with my oldest sister since they grew up on the same street so Vicki's Mom has a picture of me and Vicki when we were just babies. All the girls are married except Kathy and I and still have good marriages. Marilyn met her husband Doug when we were in highschool and "had" to get married. LOL Those were some trying times. Mary's husband Mark was the boy around the corner - our paperboy and we always knew Mary and Mark would end up together since we were kids. Mary was Bucky and Mark was Duck. LOL Kathy was Moo, I was Higgy, Vicki was Druke and Marilyn was Armie. Kathy's Mom called me Higgy right up until the week she died. One day I will post pictures of us now that I have this laptop and once I get a scanner. We had such a good time growing up together and they will be my best friends 'til the day I die. Comments (33)purrus - I've just reused the double hooks that we had pre-remodel, they've got the little roller balls. The roller balls don't actually even touch the bar, so aren't really functional, but the hooks just slides easily anyway. I've kept them because I like that I'm able to remove the outer curtain separately from the liner. As to length, many shower curtains come in two lengths, You really need the extra length due to the curve. Then you will be fine even with the snap ons. I had to shorten the liner a bit, as it reached too deep into my 22" high tub. The "bath pillow" is a rolled up towel that is held into shape by two snap on bands on both ends, and two suction cup towel holders. DIY, because I couldn't find a comfortable and good looking bath pillow at the time, they were all so cheaply made and UGLY. It's been 6 years, there might be better ones out there now. zellycat2 - with the arc you can control (to a point) the amount of "curve". This flexibility also allows the length of the span to be adjustable....See Moremaire_cate
