Converting a duct-less range hood to ducted
Comments (5)We recently bought a house with an ADU and are getting ready to rent it. The range hood in the kitchen is both ducted and ductless. For some reason, the installer (or previous owner/tenant?) installed the range hood so that it both ducts to the outdoors as well as back into the unit. Trying to understand how to convert this to the ducted-only configuration. Can I just block the holes to the ductless part? Is it more complicated than that? Looked at the manual quickly and didn't seen an obvious fix (or set-up to reverse). Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks....See MoreInsert range hood vs. chimney range hood?
Comments (2)Stainless steel easier to wipe down than wood. Also, it’s more of a pain to buy the separate components for a hood with cabinetry surround than a metal hood where it comes all-in-one. Also you need to make sure that the cabinetry surround is designed with proper proportions. A metal hood, you just shop for the one with the correct measurements. For a cabinet hood surround, you will have to carefully examine what the designer‘s hood surround plans are. It needs to be 6” wider than the cooktop. It must be deep enough front-to-back which is at least 24” deep; a common error of cabinet hood surrounds is that they are designed too shallow. Also sometimes a cabinetry surround plus a wall of more upper cabinets all around it can look like too much wall of cabinetry. Depends on the design....See MoreCan i put a smaller range hood insert into a larger range hood?
Comments (7)Hi there! While it isn't the most common, there have been times we have made a very long/large range hood and only need a certain size insert (for example 10' wide hood, only needing a 48" liner), so most often what we would do is install a stainless steel panel to allow everything to look smooth and coherent with the liner. Some people opt to add lighting to the "dead" panel space, and I would definitely recommend making sure you get the proper CFM for your space, but yes you can have an insert smaller than the range hood. Hope this helps!...See MoreDoes a ductless range hood insert need to have open ventilation?
Comments (6)@3onthetree Okay, that makes sense. I hadn't considered the pressure issue. But this is an insert that is designed to be put inside a cabinet or frame. And I have seen a lot of these ductless inserts placed inside frames like mine that are against the ceiling and with cabinets on either side and no visible vent at all. So are they all installed wrong? I have watched so many tutorials and read so many blogs and no one addresses this issue. What if we create a top out plywood with a hole, then install a duct that goes up through that hole to blow the air out of the top? That way I could still enclose the frame and I wouldn't have to worry about dust collecting in the cavity, but the air would have some place to go. Would that work? Here is a pic of what the unit looks like inside the frame:...See MoreShari Washburn
