Need help finishing off modernizing/lightening up Family Room
Comments (24)Bestyears, I just had to log in to say first, your room is fabulous. I love the color you painted it and am jealous of your amazing sewing skills. I love the fabrics you have chosen. The second thing I wanted to say is to think long and hard before purchasing the braided jute rug from Ballard. I absolutely love the look. It has to be one of the best looking jute rugs out there, but it is a maintenance nightmare. It takes some getting used to underfoot but will eventually wear to a somewhat soft feel. The maintenance however, is tremendous. I had one for 2.5 years in our primary living area with heavy traffic and it was like have 15 large shedding dogs with a few cats sprinkled in. Fibers everywhere. If your room doesn't get much traffic it might work otherwise I would try to find something else first. I replaced it with a cheap seagrass from Lowes for the time being and it doesn't shed at all. Laurainlincoln might can share more if she has this rug. It might not wear for her like it did for me. Comments (7)Oceanna, here I am. I love that ceiling mural. That's exactly how I feel in this room. It's awful in the winter when the sun goes down early--like being in a cave. I've painted two of the doors (to back porch and to garage) and the trim around them white and it makes a HUGE difference. I love it! DH is having a heart attack every time I brush white paint over his beloved dark stained pine. He gave me permission to paint it, but now it's really bothering him. Too bad - no turning back. I'll finish all the woodwork and doors in white, and paint the walls above the dark paneling in the Believable Buff, then see how it all looks. Then I'll decide what to do with the paneling. Before doing anything drastic, I'll get some posterboard, paint it to blend with the Believable Buff (maybe white, maybe the BB, maybe a shade or two darker), then see what looks best. Then there will be two more rooms and a foyer to do. I'm dreading the living room and dining room because they both have dark stained crown molding in them - lots of time up on a ladder but at least it's only an 8' ceiling....See MoreLightening up a dark north room
Comments (4)I have a north facing living room, too, and I know where you are coming from. I think one of the problems with just lamp light is that most of the light goes down and is concentrated in small areas. The rest of the room is still dark. I have three windows with a valance over them. My husband put fluroscent lights behind the valance and what a differece they make. You can't see the lights but they lights up the ceiling area near them and it really brightens the room. I also think ceiling lights would work well to brighten the whole room. You could also look into those kinds of lamps that shine their light up to brighten up a dark area....See MoreLiving room help! How can I brighten up this space??
Comments (2)It's a nice room and you've done a pretty good job. A few tweaks though,,,,exchange the short plant for a taller plant, in that corner. If you can't do a taller one, then hang the one you have from the ceiling or put it on a taller, mini table. put the plant on something like this. Target..Project 62 That sectional, (which really is too big for this room) in front of that door, really closes off the room (visually and literally). if you could, at some point, you could use separate pieces, that would be great. going w/a round, open style coffee table will soften some of those square edgesTarget. a single sofa against the long wall, some colored pillows, artwork, the coffee table/bench (using one like this that's 'open' looking, gives the illusion of more space) the blue velvet chair for some accent colors,,,,this is what you need in your space. for instance, imagine if you removed that smaller end of the sofa and had something like this against that wall or this one. BTW, these colors, below, would look great in your room. Do you have any artwork? Framed pictures, tapestry, shelving,,,anything? here is a simple example that you could do. Target has cute accessories like little tables, pillows, wall decor, etc, that you could use. bring in some color w/the arrangement like they done here, for behind your sofa. the pics behind this sofa are hung a bit high, but should give you an idea of how to accessorize your room. this would also be a better table for you. It's mainly that sectional that is really making this room heavy. if you need window coverings, I keep it sleek w/some inset blinds of some sort....See MoreSina Sadeddin Architectural Design
