Sulfur in apricot tree planting hole (not on the leaves)?

DD Scorpion

I know that you're not supposed to spray sulfur on apricot trees, since they are sensitive to sulfur on the foliage. But what I'm not sure about is whether it is ok to put sulfur pellets in the planting hole. We have compacted clay soil, and I use sulfur at the bottom of all of my planting holes to help break up the clay soil for better drainage (the sulfur converts to gypsum, which then improves the clay texture). It is also helpful to reduce the pH of our alkaline soil. Are apricot roots also sensitive to sulfur, or just the foliage? I already planted a row of apricot trees with sulfur in the planting hole and now I'm worried if it's going to affect their growth when the roots reach lower in the ground. Or maybe it's good for the roots.
