Any clay soil gardeners in California grow gooseberries? What kind?

I just bought a Pixwell gooseberry and will be growing it to use in Indian cooking as I have read that it is otherwise very tart.

I am also considering getting a Poorman gooseberry because they are sweet right off the branch, but I have only seen them in Ohio. Has anyone had good success in growing sweeter gooseberries in clay soil in California? Any sweet varieties have you grown?
