Cedar beam stain gone wrong, photos in comments

After much discussion and stress over choosing a nice medium tone stain for our cedar ceiling beams, they look almost black and I hate them.

We tried to get our painter/builder to show us samples and finally they showed us 2; neither which were what we wanted. We were told we could go get samples ourselves....although I felt like this was a service they should have offered, I did, and found one I was confident was right (tested on the same cedar as our beams).

we show up to see final product (big mistake not living in town as our build) and they are ridiculously dark. I don’t know what they did unless it was left on too long? Im so frustrated and disappointed, and mad they continued the application when it was looking just like a previous sample we agreed was too dark. Is there a fix besides sanding down?

Sidenote, our cabinets turned out darker than I’d wanted also. I hate stain.
