M daylilies 2018

Let’s see your M’s today. Quote of the day: “ Sunglasses: allowing you to stare at people without getting caught. It’s like Facebook in real life!”

This one has taken three years to settle in. The eye was finally really defined this season.
Moonlit Masquerade has been great here. Multiplied rapidly and my 6yo clump blooms for 2 months. It got divided this fall.
Not my favorite color, it’s not grown in an ideal spot. The blooms always look nice.
Magic Lake is a recent addition doing well here. The weather hasn’t had an effect on this one, blooms always open well.
M E has bloomed two season here. This one was bothered by earwigs for awhile last season. The color varies widely with the temps, below is a cool morning bloom.
a Metaphor division growing in mostly shade.
Magic Dancer was a new addition last spring. It’s a Heemskerk daylily propagated in Europe. I have another from them Cheese and Wine.
An oldie, Mini Pearl.
Mary Todd, the first daylily in my garden. Finally divided these in the fall, what a job that was!

MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD (this was a bonus from BlueRidge and I love it)

It is also one of my first daylilies to bloom

    MICO

(Nice bright pop of color but scapes are tall and lean a lot)

    MARIETTA MOMENTO

    MAMA'S PAJAMAS

    MIDNIGHT ANGEL

MONOCAN TRAIL (blooms into the late season for me)

MYSTIC MARINER (blooms are on the small side but there are lots of them)

I will search for an article I wrote several years ago, I think it was for the AHS robin regarding overwintering in pots. The last two winters, I have been lazy and just left the pots out with no protection, two winters ago, we had good snow, and everything was fine. Last winter, we did not have much snow and I was worried, but I was very lucky and did not lose anything. This winter I again left the pots unprotected, but it has been extremely cold, but hopefully all that snow came in time! However, I would not recommend doing that. I don't do that with my more expensive plants. I will look for that article. Brad, Although water does not cost anything here, we are on a well, and I do not water. I have bought several plastic kid swimming pools, and fill the swimming pools with rainwater. The pots sit or are rotated in the swimming pools. I collect extra rainwater in barrels from the shed and garage roofs, from spring on, as we do get some pretty droughty summers here as well.

David, I do feel like it's Mask of Time also; glad you agree. Yazoo Wild Violet does well here; not exceptional, but well. Bud counts are rarely impressive here but YWV has an average count for my zone. Not so impressive that I wrote it down but if it was shabby in that respect I would have noted it. The scapes are on the short side. The plant does seem to bloom for a long time if I remember correctly. And the color in my garden seems more blue-purple than what I've seen on the database.

Debra all your bud kings / queens are beautiful too! Love that August Cherry pic! And always love the bicolor / bitone look! I don't know if I am gonna count, my days of 35-40 buds are gone, they are so crowded, and I have never had so few buds on plants as this year. Maybe Lullaby Baby as it builds buds and kinda always is among my best. And Isle of Patmos looks pretty well-budded. I can name the worst though, Berry Delicious - 1 scape with 2 buds, and Nature's Crown - 4 scapes with 1 bud per scape (it dropped all the others as it usually does)

Sherry: I really like Mage Quest and Moonlit Masquerade. Magic of Oz always catches my attention, glad to see a couple of different pictures of it. Debbie, I really like Moroccan Sunrise. Lots of other goodies too, everyone!

    Malaysian Monarch. reliable.

Maleny Empire Rose. Very bright and showy.

Maleny Debutante. Great rebloomer. Has sometimes rebloomed from early to late fall.

Metaphor. One of my favorite lavenders--the color is wonderful.

    Another set.....

MYSTERY BEING WRITTEN (yes, the color is accurate)

    MYTHPERCEPTION

    MARILYN'S DIMPLE (a late bloomer)

MOSES' FIRE (I get that a lot of folks don't like doubles but this one blooms it's head off, great color, good increase, hardy as heck here in zone 4)

    MEDIEVAL GUILD

    MAJOR GENERAL

MYNELLE'S STARFISH (I agree that such a huge flower shouldn't bloom on such short scapes, but it stays because the flower is so unique....and sometimes a scape or two gets taller than advertised like this....)

MALAYSIAN MARKETPLACE (not especially vigorous here but there's nothing like it in my garden so I keep it)

Margin of Error is new here but looks promising.

Marmalade Muncher is a late bloomer.

    Here's our Mary's Baby.

Masked Marauder is too new to know if it will be hardy.

Matchless Fire is one of Bob's favorites.

Maynard Max is a 2017 intro of our friend and fellow club member Greg Lough. This picture was taken in another friend's garden. We have it but it didn't bloom last year.

Meet Your Destiny was a bonus plant from Larry Grace.

    Mema's Simone is a cute small-flowered one.

Mighty Chestnut was new to the garden last year.

We love the colors on Mississippi Memento.

Mitch Lynd is also a good grower.

I think Momentum's color is dull.

I like the shape of the throat of Moulin Rouge Red, but the flower is rather erratic.

Munchy Crunchy is too new to know if it is hardy.

My Little Tea Set is a wonderful small flowered one.

My Side of the Mountain is very vigorous.

MABOU - Mostly very good here, but it does melt by 5 pm on a hot day.

MADISON HOLLY LACE - a perfect little flower but not much in the way of B&B

MAE GRAHAM - Through the years, this has performed well here, occasionally blooming 3 times.

    MAGIC LACE

    MAGIC OF OZ

    MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION

    MAN OF SORROWS

MARTTI PUTKONEN - not a great bud count (15) but reblooms here

    MAZATLAN - too tender

    MEET YOUR DESTINY

MEME'S TUITTI FRUITTI - fragrant and reblooms - makes some babies with the same characteristics

MICHAEL'S SWORD - fairly new here. I've read it has to get to a clump to show the beard.

    MICHIGAN MAGIC

    MIDDLE OF NOWHERE

    MIDNIGHT IN PARIS

MIDNIGHT RAIDER - MUST use this to hybridize with - fragrant, 6 branches, 40+ buds and reblooms

MIDSUMMER A WOMAN'S WORK - I felt I just had to register this because it's a reblooming bud builder ... goes from 20 to 60 buds, 3 to 5 branches and can bloom for up to 3 months - until frost. That being said, it's an uninspiring orange. I probably should have just kept it for hybridizing with. I'm learning.

    Pat,

MIDSUMMER TRANQUILITY has been added to my wish list. What a beautiful looking bloom. I am in Zone 5 so I am concerned about the bud count being only 12 in your garden. The rule of thumb is a drop in bud count by 5 for every different zone the further north one goes.

David , I heard that too , and for a while I didnt buy certain plants. Then I rethought it , and now I do . I figure if a plant really grabs my attention I should get it . Better some blooms than no blooms and if I really really like it I can always use it for hybridizing to create something as nice or better with a good bud count in my area

Really so many nice M's. Can't comment on them all but do have a few questions: Nan/Sherry or whoever else grows this one. Is Mighty Chestnut just a smoky orange (smoky as in Smoky Mountain Autumn) or is it in reality a muddy orange?.....Anyone who grows both Mary Lightfine and Mary's Baby. What's the difference to you?.....Celeste Marietta Warrior is always an eye catcher to me......Daylily 99. Middle of Nowhere is calling to me. Hope to see more of it this season. The difference between MARY LIGHTFINE and MARY'S BABY is the color. MARY'S BABY has a richer purple color that seems to shimmer. I also think that it produces more flowers.

Maryl, I agree with David about Mary Lightfine and Mary's Baby. Mary's Baby is the stronger grower with better color. Mary Lightfine's flowers, if the weather conditions are right, sometimes are bitones. The hybridizer, Richard Norris, thinks Mary's Baby is the better of the two.

I would call Mighty Chestnut's color burnt orange. I don't grow Smoky Mountain Autumn so I can't compare them.
