Foster fur-kids, part deux....
Comments (27)Make sure they test for Coccidia...sometimes they don't check for that and just look for worms... Yes we will indeed have his stools checked for Coccidia, thanks :o) You know usually stress isn't the cause the diarrhea, it is usually something that was already there and the stress has lowered the immune system just enough to set it loose.... Does that make sense?? yes, totally, the same thing happens with hamsters but mostly Syrians. Syrians get wet tail because something shocks their immune systems when they are moved long distances. The bacteria are there but it doesn't strike them hard until they are stressed. Are his eyes clear and sparkly (no gunk)? his eyes get gooky when he goes out in the bitter cold but otherwise they are clear and no sign of infection, scleras are white throughout Is his nose runny at all...dripping?? No,no drips at all, dry most of the time and cold and damp when he comes in from the cold but dries up again What color are his gums? Should be a nice pink, not too pale.. very nice pink and well hydrated...been checking for that Does he feel extra warm? (normal is around 101º) no, normal How many rounds of shots has he gotten? one round of shots on December 19th In consideration of his breed mix, I would make sure to time his last distemper/parvo vaccination to be given after his 16th week of age (at the same time as his rabies vac). ok...what is the rationalle for that, just curious Did he get a vaccination immediately before you took him home? no, almost a month ago How old did you say he was?? 9 weeks Do keep me posted...I certainly get anxious when I hear the words "sick puppy"...aak! well, I really don't think he's sick with a fever or anything but he could still have something in his stools, so we'll have that checked. He's playing like a kitten, pouncing on sticks and leaves and chasing after toys and generally either getting into trouble or looking for attention...typical puppy stuff. He is napping much better now. He'll nap for a full hour now whereas he was only taking 10 minute cat naps before and crying a lot. Today there was no crying at all and he is back on his food eating about 50/50 steamed rice and dry chow. One thing I thought of was that darn oil tablet the lady gave him at the rescue. I don't know how long she'd been giving it to him but those things are big and I'm sure it was like giving him cod liver oil twice a day. I've discontinued that entirely and today he is having better formed poos and not feeling the urgency to get outside. Ugh! It's a horrid day today... freezing rain so the deck where I was letting him out is thick with ice and the poor thing is terrified. I am too...afraid of falling that is so now I have to trapse him through the garage and out the back garage door onto MORE ice but at least if he falls he will fall only the ground and not off the edge of the deck. I'll pop back in with at "Pupdate" later and let you know what a second slide of his stools shows. Thanks so much, Barb & "Lake" When I foster puppies, I always have my vet tech/or vet if necessary on speed dial!! LOL!! Comments (160)Baking soda and vinegar cancel each other out, but not hydrogen peroxide (although the reaction might weaken it). One site suggested a vinegar and water mix, followed with baking soda, but that didn't work for me. I've read Nature's Miracle changed their formula and doesnt work as well as before. There are other "enzyme" products - I tried a pet store version which didn't work. A new one called Anti-icky poo is really expensive. Guess I'll try the hydrogen/baking soda version, and will buy a black light to see if the cat urine stain is still there (and elsewhere). And I PROMISE to post back my results.....just like the person below did, lol. Vanessa Buddle So yes this original post was along long time ago,but I’m at my wits end with my baby boy peeing all over my brand new house and brand new couch. I’ve been using straight vinegar on the spots straight after he’s pee’d there,it’s not helping at all and after I close the house up,even just for 5 mins,it absolutely reaks from him marking his territory. I can’t get angry with him as it’s a natural act that he is doing, but it’s at the point where I can’t eat in my house or have people over. This smell has to be gone before summer otherwise it’s going to be unbearable. I know that getting him desexed may not solve this issue and that’s my worry as he’s a rag doll and I breed them.(in saying that,he only started marking the place after that last litter.the litter was mainly boys and I think he felt intimidated)anyway, please wish me luck and I will definitely let you know the results after trying this recipe.Tia September 5, 2018...See MoreFostering cats when you already have one
Comments (10)Sue, I understand, and I sympathize with you. You went through a heartbreaking battle... Yet, I do not want to see people get discouraged from fostering. I think it is fare to give an honest picture: yes, some risks are involved. With caution and common sense, fostering can be a wonderful and rather rewarding experience The death of the entire littler from FIP is more than expected. It is believed that genetics play a key role as to which cats will succumb to FIP. Litter mates are more genetically alike and thus are predisposed for the corona virus mutation. Corona virus is omnipresent, and probably all of our cats have been exposed to it at some point. Yes, a new cat can bring corona virus with it, and most likely, the cats will get nothing but a "kitty cold" out of it. Unfortunately, if a cat's body is going to let the virus mutate, it is going to happen, regardless of whether one fosters or not. It is sad. But, on a happier note, fostering can be fun. Little kittens are bundles of joy (I foster all ages) and entertainment. Two weeks of isolation is a very good idea. I often set up cages in the garage, while deworming, defleaing and observing. Some of my older cats love playing with foster kids... From Honey From Kittens November 2008 Giving them up is hard...some more than others... One of my latest fosters, a white deaf kitty Powder Puff, is such a love, I am keeping him...I just cant part with him! From Kittens October 2009 And let me tell you, if you ever want to adopt a kitty but in the process of looking...fostering is THE best way to find that best matching cat...you get to know the personalities, their silly habits, and such...You literally fall in love with some of the furry fosters:)...See Moreneed temporary foster family for cats!
Comments (21)My thanks to Elly for your compassion and the realization that most everyone on this post has been less than helpful and more judgemental. To the naysayers: this is obviously a very difficult situation for me. My plans fell through and this is NOT my ideal outcome but I am making do with the resources I have available to me. I was hoping this site would be able to offer some advice (and don't get me wrong, many of you have and I appreciate it), but telling me to get rid of my cats and snide remarks such as "Who would want to care for and get attached to someone else's cats and then hand them over when you return?" are completely unnecessary. It is very easy to sit and judge from behind a computer screen. Maybe think about the situation before posting responses. That being said an old friend has kindly offered to take them in after I told everyone and anyone I know that I was looking for a foster home (BOARDER home for those of you who will correct me). Believe it or not some people are just compassionate and love animals and are willing to help out a friend. I'm very happy with this outcome, even happier than the original plan, so everything has worked itself out nicely. As I said before, to those who gave me sound advice I TRULY do appreciate it. This forum has provided a wealth of information and advice to me in the past and I refuse to let a few negative people ruin that. (And FYI I have seen this in other threads, not just this one and often by the same posters.) Thanks again!...See Morecat_mom
