Comments (14)This style is very common in my neighborhood, in a 2 storey version. The nicest ones treat the area beside the garage as a courtyard. Landscaping can accomplish this, and some have a wall across too. The entrance to the courtyard from the driveway is also pulled away from the house, so it feels very spacious, not cramped. Some have a patio area in front, one has a really nice fountain. I'll draw something to give you an idea. You already have a tree that sort of defines the area. Comments (12)hey grits - so... even if there is a lot of house behind the front elevation.....so what? you can't see it when you look at the home from the curb so just focus on improving the curb appeal from the front elevation. I think it would be cool to either paint (with a strong accent color like orange as shown in the waldrum residence) or cover the 2nd story peak with a color or galvanized steel that would continue to the first story as a vertical element. That would help break up the strong horizontal lines which currently exist. I think you are on the right track to go edgy and contemporary with your beach home!...See MoreCurb appeal side/back of house facing street 1900 Farm house
Comments (8)We have only owned the house for a year. You would be amazed how much tree/shrub cutting we have already done! All bradford pears were removed. Several hackberries removed and a LOT of tree limbing. We trimmed up the shrubs a bunch last year but didn't want to totally shock them. Took them down some more this year. So its a work in progress. All that to say...the property is actually very charming, even magical : ) There is LOTS of shade but also that pretty scattered light coming through the trees. My biggest concern is that brick chimney wall that faces the street. We have discussed Japanese Maple or Japanese LIlac tree. The maple is pretty but I'd love a flowering tree if possible. It is very shady though and don't know if the Lilac would do well? Appreciate any ornamental tree advise please. Here are the boxwoods when we purchased the house! There is one tall section left in the trimmed pic above b/c a robins nest with eggs are in there right now. But basically we have brought all of those down to porch level except the ones on the corners of house....See MoreHelp with house color and adding some curb appeal to exterior of house
Comments (4)I dont think the concept of "curb appeal" applies here - is there an actual curb and why would anyone need to have a clear unobstructed view of the house from the street? City and suburb living is about community and connection with neighbors, so there youd want to present an exterior that is inviting, and connects with the neighborhood. But this is very much not that - this is retreat or summer house hideaway. So the "curb appeal" really is in the boardwalk, and the stairs, its very alluring, while the house itself remains semi-hidden. Or you can see lights of the house through the woods - that too can be very enticing. As you walk down the path - you get to the stairs and at top of stairs that's where youd want to present more of an inviting view of the house itself. Or whatever that space is underneath the deck - seems that could be some sort of outdoor living space. But we cant see those areas from the pic so then the question is what would we do with the portion we can see - the approach to the house. Some low voltage pathway lights along the board walk, just enough to illuminate the way, and look into native plantings for under the trees. There's an art to using native plants and creating a lush natural bird and wildlife habitat, but keeping it from becoming too wild or unkempt. I would talk to a lighting consultant re: how you can light the house to look most magical and summery I'm thinking more lantern like, sparkly effects. Certainly no yard lights or anything that shines beams of light up into the sky or sideways into people eyes as they are walking toward the house. Re: the wood, yes keep it wood tone! You could use 3 different stain colors for more visual interest - eg dark charcoal for vertical posts, lighter cedar tones for stair tread/board walk, etc....See Morevisualizemaven
