new job/money saving tips?
Comments (13)Earning money around the neighborhood is way less difficult than you'd think...my neighbor boys put out a little flyer advertising sweeping driveways (they're 8 and 6) and lo and behold, they've got regular gigs! Their mom even asked my DD to join in, because they didn't want to do it, they just wanted to send the flyer around LOL -- but they've got to live with the results of their actions, and their mom figured my DD would keep them on task :) So seriously, older folks *love* to have younger folks help around. I know I'd love to give the money to an "enterprising young man" over a service. And who knows where it will lead, whom he'll meet, etc. Cutting back on activities is difficult *if* you focus only on what you can't do. If you can go about finding things you *can* do instead, you'll find your time is completely full and maybe he can tell friends about it and take them to the things *he's* going to! We went to the coast on Saturday and attended a great free talk on fossils that entranced my daughter and all the kids in attendance, for two long hours--a *great* educator, IMO. I found out about it from the paper. The same presenter also gives expensive admission talks sometimes, but this one was sponsored by the state and was free. I consider it money saved :), and great education/exposure, and our friends are really interested to find out when he'll be speaking again. I found out from a friend that Apple computers has been doing free one-day media classes this summer. FREE. They do it every summer. Classes on podcasting, moviemaking, music, etc. I would bet where you are there are loads of great free opportunities; look in the paper with an eagle eye. They aren't promoted as obviously as the profit-making events, which makes it extra rewarding when you discover them :) Maybe your son will become the new source of cool unknown things to do. We just decided not to buy mochas out of the house and we figure it will save enough to pay for a medically necessary gym membership for me. That's how much we were subsidizing the Starbucks shareholders. I also drink a lot of protein drinks instead of breakfast, honestly, and sometimes (like today, when it's hot), instead of a dinner. I use protein and milk and ovaltine, or sometimes just make a smoothie with yogurt, fresh fruit, and protein powder (if you are interested, I'll tell you the names of the protein powders my daughter doesn't snub :)). Serving for serving, it's not expensive and it's *wonderful* nutrition. There are also products now that can do a passable job of drycleaning at home...you can have things *really* drycleaned much less often. I feel odd mentioning all these ideas like the above because I don't know what you're doing already in this regard. And re stocking up when foods are on sale: OH yeah. I buy organic ground beef *only* when it's on sale, then put it in the freezer. Same with frozen organic fruit/vegs. Bread freezes/defrosts very well too, so when the good bagged bread (not the fresh baked paper bags, the plastic bags, but there are some that are organic) is on sale, stock up and freeze it. Saves a significant amount of money. If you don't have a real freezer (non defrosting), you can probably get one for pretty inexpensive or possibly free off craigslist or freecycle. You could even post a wanted post and see what happens... and btw, this is probably a great thread for lots of people; I know I've learned from it already :)...See MoreSmall-scale money savings option
Comments (29)Hi Marilyn, Well ... I have one feral cat, that's been around for a long time. She loves to be petted ... but won't let me pick her up and hold her. Don't know what happened to them all - ten years ago when uncle's wife died and I spent a couple of months with him till his cattle went on grass, he had about a dozen, and after his death two years later there were a few less than that. There was one old gray one that probably died. Some folks several years ago left four little white kittens in a box by the mailbox, and in the morning their all-white Mom showed up, as well. The kittens all had an extra claw, and landlord found homes for all, but I don't remember what happened to the mom. One had four kittens, I found one lying in the driveway, and its head was squashed, so it appears that it got run over. The final two of that litter disappeared together, so possibly a fox or coyote got them ... if they'd been out on the road, it's doubtful whether both would have been hit together. There have been some visitors temporarily around for a while, on occasion, the latest being a few months ago, and now the remaining female is getting rather large around the girth, so expect that there'll be some more, soon. As for the money ... have you heard what residential homes cost per month ... let alone the fees at nursing homes? The idea is to use up the last dollar on the last day of one's life ... and can you tell me how to arrange that? (Apart from suicide ... which gets difficult, when one gets seriously disabled ... and a friend who's willing to help ... goes to jail!). And one presumes that one has arranged for the cost of the funeral. And the burial plot (if not scattering ashes on the river ... a nearby field ... a woodlot, etc.). It's rather important that one has arranged for enough to pay for one's final income tax bill: those folks prefer that. And for many, there's a spouse - I avoid that situation. And one would like to leave some to one's kids. And there are worthwhile charities, that suggest that one think of them when making one's will. What else can you suggest - oh, yes - you put in your $0.02 worth of request, as well, didn't you? Up here, soon, that'll need to be one's $0.10 worth, what with the demise of the penny. But I guess there'll be some of yours, floating around, for a while. ole joyful...See MoreSubstantial money-saving project for new parents.
Comments (5)Cloth diapers were not practical for me. I was happy not to deal with the mess. I bought store brand disposables because they were the least expensive that worked for my kids. I did make the homemade baby wipes. They were cheaper than store bought. There are recipes on-line. Basically you cut a roll of paper towels in half. Heat some water, baby lotion, baby soap, and whatever else you want together and pour it over the towels. Keep it in a seal tight container. Molding could be a problem in warmer weather. It was also possible to keep some of the wipes in the fridge and only keep out a day or so's worth at a time. I don't recommend using the wipes cold. Also, I didn't want to dull one of my good knives for cutting through the cardboard roll so I bought kniveat a thrift store and used that....See MoreNew Construction Home: Pay Cash vs Construction Loan
Comments (4)Yes to your own RE attorney. Yes to a methodology of lien release tracking. Yes to setting up a construction draw schedule even if you don't have a loan. Your builder should know when he needs draws and design a schedule for you. Planning is everything. Know what you want and stick to it. Strangely enough, once the foundation is dug, a lot of risk diminishes. If there are no rocks or water, your foundation costs drop off. Shop around for other lenders. You only need a construction loan. Not a construction to perm. They are different. It's good to have a line of credit in your back pocket when building. I suggest you explore a home equity line of credit on your current home. If you need it, you have it. If you don't use it, you were prepared. Lenders will love you. They love to lend to people who don't need the money. And, they love lending to people who already own the land. Expect and prepare for cost overruns. Construction lending is high risk and you are lowest level of risk of a high risk endeavor. Make the lenders compete for your business....See MoreVirgil Carter Fine Art
