matching flooring with wood cabinets

We are going to put on an addition. Our home is 9 years old so even though I’m not a huge fan of our cabinets, I don’t feel comfortable changing them since they are fairly new and in good shape. My question is, some of the tile will be removed and I’m looking into putting in tile that looks like wood flooring (we have dogs and small children and I want it to be durable). How do I go about picking a color that doesn’t clash with the wood of the cabinets? I feel like my only option is to go dark, but I’m worried it will show dirt. Any advice?

Comments (2)Are you planning to keep the same brick on the fireplace or going over it with stone veneers? I would say that if you are going to be replacing the cabinets at some point, don't even consider the color they are now, consider what they will look like when they are finished. I moved into a home 3 years ago and had a hard time getting my new wood floors to coordinate with the cabinets. I ended up going with BR-111 exotic Brazillian Walnut because it has many different tones in the wood and a lot of character. Worked out perfectly. We are now moving into a new home. Will be replacing the cabinets but have to try to coordinate all the wood trim with our new cabinets & wood flooring. I will again be going with a wood flooring that has different shades and more character as to pull all my other colors together. Comments (5)Cherry is harder than alder. I have been in a wonderful log home that used cherry floors. The large windows well illuminated the hundreds of small dents in the floor. The home was in that awkward phase between baby and child and the dents had not yet blended together to form "patina". You could see what it could become in the traffic patterns where the dents and wear was more numerous. The darker color of the cherry only emphasised the areas of wear and tear with the less worn areas like under the piano. I personally could NEVER in a million years live with a floor like that. Alder is even softer and I won't even do cabinetry in it without a customer signing a waiver of understanding. It's up to you, but I think you sound more like a hickory or pecan flooring person than an alder. Maybe just tweak the stain a bit to be more of a color that you like. Don't match anything though! Comments (15)Thank you @eld6161 and I'm sorry for the confusion. We are doing a complete renovation of the master bathroom. We are not moving any plumbing around, but new everything. My current bath is dark (orangy vanity with black countertop, and everything dark taupes, beiges, salmons... I can post a photo if needed). Below is a photo of the current placement/measurements. I also included a photo of the newly renovated main bath. I'm not sure what color vanity to go for. I was not even considering gray until my friends and husband told me to go for gray. I only saw a dark gray vanity with brass handles and thought that was nice so I said I would consider it. I am trying not to copy our main bath. I like modern farmhouse/classic; I want the master bath to feel warm and cozy, not sterile or cold... I love wood tones, whites, grays and black (as accents I would say), basically neutrals haha....See MoreRebecca
6 years agoThanks for your help. I should clarify that I’m planning on upgrading the countertops to granite or quartz. I was thinking something light like the counter top in this picture. Do you think if I went ahead and did a dark floor color like the one in this picture it would help? I don’t really think redoing the cabinets will be in the budget and I don’t think I’ll be able to convince my husband to do it.

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agothat is not a good pic (if at all) of giallo ornamental granite. it's much more yellow/golden in real life) this gold tone isn't the best stone choice for your kitchen, in my opinion.

Can you show a picture showing more of the cabinets?
why don't you pick more of a cooler tone stone? This is River White granite
or, this Alaska White may bring in some of the cooler brown tones
this would also look good down the road if you ever decide to paint the cabinets white.
do you have an island? maybe just paint the island white.

6 years agoOh yeah I didn’t realize that picture I attached of that granite had such a yellow tone. I was just going by the picture. I really like that Alaska White. Thanks for putting that picture together. I don’t have back splash right now but I was hoping to add it when we put on the addition. Do you think I could do white subway tile with that granite? Here are some better pictures of the kitchen. Thanks for all your help!!

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoyes, the white subway tile looks great w/alaska white granite (also call Delicatus White). do not do the 4" granite piece up the wall if you will be tiling.
here is White Springs Granite (not sure if Alaska White is also named White Springs, but they are close looking) w/cabinets similar to yours. this has the 4" piece up the back and a painted wall. either do this, or eliminate it and tile the entire wall. not both.
notice the darker flooring like you wanted.
Alaskan White. so you can see how it looks next to white cabs as well.
with white backsplash in glass
and in ceramic subway
with just the 4" piece
and running it up the back all the way (i dislike the darker granite they have w/it)
notice how the white island stands out w/the dark flooring against this granite. even if you did a two tone look (half wood half white) or maybe just painted the hutch off to the side, this gives u an idea.
