How to plumb drains to minimize dishwasher drain noise?

Plumbing is set up like this:

Dishwasher on left, ----> double porcelain sink with disposer on left side.

What is the best way to install the under sink drain piping so that water flows through the drains making the minimal amount of noise possible?

It is an open floor plan and noises carry through the house. I want to avoid any loud gurgling noises made by air and water mixing, splashing and echoing when water drains from the dishwasher.

I'm going to get a dishwasher installed that's rated between 39 and 44 dba, but it doesn't matter how quiet the dishwasher is if the sound of a water and air mixture gurgling through the drains is more than twice as loud as the dishwasher itself.

Do certain types of drain piping hide and muffle noises better than others?

Would almost need an unconventional installation that does not utilize the sink trap. Would need a standpipe similar to that of a laundry washer under the sink in the cabinet. It would have a separate trap and need vented correctly.

Now you got me brainstorming for the future lol....

As far as drain noise and hiding it, cast iron is used in the living space where the water runs and transitioned to pvc for the venting and underslab to manage costs.

You could look into the quiethouse brochure to see how it works. No hub cast piping and fernco connections are used.

So for said standpipe under the sink, cast iron would be your best option for noise. They have p traps in cast out there, just need a few ferncos and some no hub pipe.

A standpipe is noisier than a standard DW discharging into the disposal inlet. The open top standpipe gurgles would be amplified by the large open space of a sink cabinet as well.

Keep the disposal drain cover in place, and use the drain cover for the other side as well. Use pipe insulation and wrap it. That’s all you can reasonably do.

yes, usually the vent will be almsot straight up from teh sink on teh roof. BUT it could in reality be plumbed halfway across the house. if the vent is easily accessible, jsut take a water hose there and run it down in teh vent. push the hose as far down as you can, then turn onthe water full blast. it should push any debris on thru.

I can't help you entirely with your questions, but I have a few comments: - most areas of this country no longer require an Air Gap, and haven't for years. I don't know specifically about Maine. - the Code requirements for an Air Gap have been mostly replaced by Code requirements for a "high loop" installation. That's because high loop works better than air gap for the purpose of making sure dirty dishwater doesn't back up into your sink. A "high loop" is a loop in the hose which is higher than the point where the hose connects to the sink drain. The idea here is to prevent waste water from flowing back into the dishwasher. - I recommend you post your questions on the Plumbing Forum. Kind of depends on what your jurisdiction requires on why it is there. If it is super annoying you can do a high water loop and get rid of the air gap. There will still be gurgling drain noise coming from the sink drain. I guess if your air gap is excessively loud for some reason then maybe worth removing but I am not sure. The high loop or air gap is there so sink drain water doesnt end up in the dishwasher. Thinking outside of the box, I guess you would need a nonconventional installation if you want no noise. Something similar to a washing machine standpipe setup with its own separate trap but under the sink.

A standpipe could be noisier unless you vent to the outside of the house =). That's the configuration I have installed, including separate traps for GD and sink. Look up Johnson tee's online. My primary concern wasn't noise though, I just didn't want my dishwasher draining to my garbage disposal since I was doing all my plumbing from scratch. I don't want a clog in my GD backing up my dishwasher if I forget. Personally I don't think my setup is going to be any quieter than draining to the GD, water is still being flushed through a trap with all that gurgling.

Like Sophie mentioned: insulation, maybe even adhesive sound deading matt, would be your best bet.

The dishwasher drain may be installed in the horizontal pipe between the disposal and the p-trap using a wye, provided it is acceptable according to your local code.
