Buying A Pig In a Poke -- A Mattress

A mattress is just the same 'unknown', isn't it? I feel like I want to go into a store with a chain saw. What IS inside that pretty cover? How many coils, and of what strength and composition? How much 'gel', and is that foam really latex? Show me!

We need new mattresses at home and at the condo. EXTRA Firm would be my choice, since even 'firm' feels like 'medium' to me -- or will, in no time.

Neither of us is 'heavy'. I'm a little over 100 lbs. DH is 180. (Impossible to know who sleeps in the condo bed -- we did just have a Canadian footballer and spouse.)

Sears on Maui has a Serta "Hanover" King for about $1300. The present Sealey "Fergus Falls II T3" (mfg. 2013) was about that price; is still "ok but not great".

Our Verlo-made bed at home is sagging under the pelvis area; it's eight (refurbished a year ago).

Would you buy an air bed? An all foam one? Stick with coils?

Is there some better place to ask about mattresses than here?
