Comments (8)I put a few of my potted plants beneath a tall outdoor table, which creates a bit of protection for them. Consequently I still have a few petunias and chrysanthemums in bloom. I planted six pansies in the fall. They are not protected, and are doing well. I sure am enjoying their pretty flower faces. I got my indoor bulbs started late, in spite of having purchased them early. Darn it! The amaryllis has been planted as well as a few hyacinths. I have a bunch of tulips and paperwhites still needing to be put into pots for indoor blooms. I'll probably put that off until January because Christmas decorations will take up all available space. I usually start putting up Christmas stuff on Thanksgiving evening, after dinner has been cleaned up. That's tomorrow! Lorna...See MoreWhat Roses Do You Wish You'd Never Bought?
Comments (79)Oh yes, the lovely frustration of Clothilde Soupert. I find her less frustrating if I simply think of her as a novelty rose with round blooms, sort of like a white balloon flower. Almost nothing else balls in my zone (not the very double Austins, not Belinda's Dream, not Eden), but CS is dependable to ball in her first flush or two. Even in my semi-arid zone in baking hot sun between the sidewalk and street, here's what she looks like most Junes: Fortunately, later in the year she condescends to open up and bloom more conventionally, though even at the best of time her young blooms have a very round quality. As for Austins, I'm fortunate that they do quite well for me no-spray, since they are among the hardier roses I grow beyond the once-bloomers and Canadians. That's one of the benefits of being in a dryer zone, as I need to remind myself next August when I'm hauling the hoses around the yard in baking 100 degree heat. LavenderLace, thanks for the recommendation of Twice in a Blue Moon. That's another lavender that is just surviving in the warmest spot in the yard by the skin of its teeth (what you think roses don't have teeth?? Ahem, they're called thorns). I do get a couple of blooms a year but it's hard to call them lavender. Still, I don't consider this a washed out pink and this one earns its 6 square inches of garden space. Now you want lavender/purple, Veilchenblau blows them all out of the water in its spring flush. Here is was last year and it has almost doubled in size this year. I'm expecting very nice things from it... Cynthia...See MoreWish I could do better with my roses
Comments (18)There are so many kind people on this forum. Everyone of you are special, I mean that sincerely! I believe being encouraging, while also being candid is what I needed, thanks! Alana, I need to learn more about the gallicas, damasks and albas. I do love my Bourbons and hybrid perpetuals. I believe Hybrid Musk is a class of roses that is recommended for this area. I don’t currently have any, but have ordered Lavender Lassie and Felicia, anxious to see what they do. Diane, you’ve made me realize something that could be part of the problem. I have thought that burying the graft isn’t necessary here, but I believe it is something I need to do. I might do well to try some of the varieties you’ve mentioned, I definitely admire yours. I do realize our conditions are different though. Seil, interesting that you commented “I always envy your beautiful roses and photos and wish mine looked so lovely!” Just a couple of days ago, I was thinking the same of yours! And I think it was you who has commented before that we show our best on here, which is probably true for the most part. I do always enjoy your beautiful pictures and look forward to them. I do enjoy my roses tremendously. Oklahoma does present many challenges, I don’t want to make those challenges any more difficult by being lax in some areas, which sometimes I think I have a tendency to be....See MoreBrandon Garner St. Louis area z6
