My Succulents won't be getting any more direct sunlight :O
Comments (27)Paul and Christina I like your thinking! :-) Paul, the common/shared balcony does get some weather but not with the same force or as much rain as mine. I've never noticed a power outlet on the shared balcony, but I wouldn't use it anyway because we have a lot of people here that have absolutely no idea of safety. We have another balcony directly above ours the same size as ours, so there is better shelter from the elements. My balcony also has a small balcony above, the same size as mine. Oh my goodness! I have the same sort of shelving in my room, of the first image from your link lol. I bought expensive ones so they can hold more weight than I could ever manage. I did put the small one outside for a short while but it started developing surface rust pretty quickly. But I've noticed recently much cheaper ones of the same design. What type of store is the BBS? I wouldn't like to tie or even chain anything from the balcony fence above and we have asked permission to get hooks for hanging plants, I even offered to pay to get them to get professionally done, a firm no :-( By the way, I have often used zip ties with far greater success than even strong wire, and cheap enough to replace often if needed. Christina, I love the lockable wheels thought! Then I could even take them from the shared balcony to mine and vice versa. And even inside if needed. Just had a thought! We have a walkway across to the next building/wing of the complex, that I've noticed gets full sun for quite a few hours in the middle of the day. I also have a few trusted friends on my floor who's balconys face north so should get the hottest sun for many hours. So...... cheap shelving with wheels, maybe 2 if needed. Roll the plants all over the place to get the best conditions available for any season lol. Equals - I may be able to keep and add to my Succulents after all!!! Woooo hooooooo :-D Also very spoilt plants lol. Also equals a very long post. Sorry guys. But thank you so much!!!!...See Morewhich BIG plants can take direct sunlight on a glassed veranda?
Comments (19)Some things to consider: Sun through glass is not really full Sunlight - depending on the angle a portion is reflected back. If it is double-glazed then there will be more losses. If it is a low-E glass like most modern homes have then it will cut down even more light. Most woody plants can take full Sun and woody tropicals by nature are full Sun plants. In an enclosed space I will be more worried about heat build-up. For plants that prefer bright indirect light you may want to consider a shade cloth overhead....See Morerainbow haze in direct sunlight

Comments (10)Your house will be beautiful! Lovely design. Regarding your siding question: I live about 70 miles NE of you, near Sacramento. The exterior of our house is redwood and glass. When we built the house in 1978, we had redwood plywood siding which did not hold up at all. So, in 1999, we removed that, sheathed the house with plywood for strength, and put on individual redwood boards (3/4” x 5”, T&G, blind-nailed with stainless steel nails). The most recent maintenance I did on the wood was in 2017, and at that point I devised my best procedure to maintain it. I can give you details, but it may be too long to write here, so here’s a summary. For your situation, I recommend treating the raw wood of whatever species you use with Concrobium Mold Inhibitor (available at Home Depot) and, after it dries thoroughly, then apply the finish. If you use redwood, the best product I’ve found is PPG ProLuxe SRD-RE Wood Finish, Semi-Transparent Matte, One Coat, Natural (Product # SIK250-078). The “RE” formulation designates “reduced emissions” so it is usable in California. The biggest problem I have faced, even in the hot Sacramento Valley, is surface mold that accumulates on the north side of the house. The siding has held up very well with the procedure I used back in 2017, and I am just now doing some maintenance on the north side to wash off the surface mold that has started to accumulate. So this is the first time in 5 years that I have had to do anything. I’m also lightly refreshing the finish after scrubbing off the mold in some areas. One important point to remember is to never re-apply finish without first cleaning the mold off the wood. Attached are some photos that I took yesterday. None of the areas shown has had anything done to them in 5 years. Excuse the scaffolding – we are in the middle of having the soffits and beams restained (by professionals – that’s a bit too risky for a 76-year-old woman!). East facing, first floor East facing, second floor South facing, second floor North facing West facing The color and condition of the wood stays very good, even on the sunny hot south and west sides....See MoreBunny
