Exterior Wood Siding in Direct Sunlight

Hello Houzz hive! We need advice!

We are building a custom home in San Francisco. We bought the house halfway through permitting and cannot change the exterior appearance of the home - we must go with the plans. The problem is that while it looks nice we're discovering it's design is less than optimal for cost and maintenance.

We have a south facing home that will get direct sunlight all day, year-round and it has wood siding. The back of the house has several doors that are exterior wood clad against more wood siding but will never get direct sunlight. So we need to figure out what wood we can use to side the house with that we can also get matching doors from one of the major retailers (marvin, milgard, pella). Obviously we want the back and front to be consistent. But we also don't want to have to give our first born child to pay for it.

We'd like to start with advice on what is the best wood to side the house with when it has direct sunlight year round. Our contractor has said we should go with something untreated and let it naturally wear so we don't have to maintain it every year. We also have redwood beams throughout the existing house that we have considered reusing for the siding but just not sure how well redwood will hold up in the direct sun.

I keep reading conflicting advice online and would love to hear from folks that actually have wood siding with direct sun exposure or builders that have used it. Pictures are a plus!

Thank you!!
