I wonder why they chose to call it a one day sale?

They've done it for years...the one day is the 2nd day...the prior day is "preview" but with all the same sales...

They didn't have a preview day, that would have made the one day sale 3 days worth instead of 2 LOL. I don't know why it annoys me, but it just does.

LOL. The thing that annoys my Hubs the most is seeing prices that end in .99 -- it's a marketing gimmick to make people think they're paying a buck less than they actually are. Folks see $29.99 and they think "Ah, only twenty-nine dollars" instead of realizing the item is actually $30. It's amazing to think that this tactic works so well, but apparently it does.

In the overall scheme of things, it's not something I let annoy me. It could be an advertising gimmick to get more attention.

What annoys me are the price tags that end in .98 and then all the coupons say, in minute print, does not apply to items ending with .98 Grrrrrrrrr

I think some of you may be running short of important things to do and to occupy your thoughts. Get busy with more activities worthy of your time and attention.

I'm the only one of my siblings that isn't hooked on sales/adverts/coupons. That's the best thing about subscribing to the electronic-only version of our daily newspaper: no sales inserts! Sister says, "oh dear, should I save them for you?" "NOOOooooooo o o o o o!"

ROTFL - thanks folks. Elmer and Nickel - I'm with you both. There is no coupon cutting in this house. I have a marketing and advertising background and so I can't help but "see" things and they're not unexpected but they do make me smile and/or frown, but that's okay. But I will not give up my PAPER products - we have sons who still sell paper and printing and so that's that :)

What about " up to X % off " I hate that one too.

That Macy's advertising gimmick has always bugged me too.

Their ads are funny, but I feel sorry for their employees. When I've been in Macy's it is messy, not enough staff when you want help, they can't compete with online companies.

I just went through a hassle ordering pasta bowls, after ordering I noticed they were sending them to an old address, even though it had my new address online? After a lengthy phone call I was able to get them to cancel and reroute the order back to its warehouse to credit me for the order. Never got the bowls, but they proceeded to charge me, I couldn't get through on the phone so I hoped and waited I'd get a corrected statement, nope they then charged me a late fee and interest. Finally after Christmas I was able to reach a human to correct the credit, (online it stated it issued a gift card for my credit which I never wanted or received), I'm still waiting for a corrected statement showing zero balance.

Oh, I LOVE my flyers. The only reason I chose to deliver them is because my delivery was hit and miss. Then we stopped when hubby's health problems reared it's head. The large bundles of flyers were killing us carrying up 3 flights of stairs and back down again. The actual delivery was great; meeting people and their dogs.

I hate, hate trying to look through ads online. Scrolling page after page, and trying to blow it up to look at the details. Give me paper any day!! Also easier to price-match if necessary.

The ads that I hate are the multiplier ones. In bold numbers .99 and in small print (if 4 or more) if less than 4 it's $1.50 each, for example.

cmarlin, I think the physical stores are suffering. The closest Macy's to me is sadly understaffed any more. I wanted some help in the childrens clothing department a couple of weeks ago and managed to get the attention of a young sales clerk passing through. It wasn't his department and he couldn't help me with my sizing question (I'd been told sizes 7 and 10 for great nieces on the other side of the country and most of the merchandise was sized S, M, L)

It was a little messy. Customer service office has closed, and that's where gift wrap took place so that is no longer available either. The only department that appeared to be fully staffed with eager to help clerks was cosmetics and I wasn't there to buy any.

However, I placed an online order for my mother through Macys and it came exactly as ordered and immediately. Flawless transaction.

That's an understatement. It's not a new trend, there are closed or under-occupied malls all over, in some regions much more than others, and the rate of mall problems/closures is clearly accelerating. I think the market will support the expensive/fancy top level and cheap/everyday low level store types but the middle is going away.

There it is. Hence the closing of Sears etc. Because democracies are the exception and always temporary things here are returning to the historical norm of a few nobles living lavish lifestyles in a sea of destitute peasants.

No, I don't think so. I hate thinking or talking about things in purely class terms but the road to personal economic comfort and success in life has long been through education and hard work. Not just academic education, education and training in the trades, skilled jobs and other like pursuits count too.

When the US had a large manufacturing sector, there were millions of people so employed without education, without much training, whose high wages made them think they'd found a back door to the "middle class". It was temporary.

Economies evolve over time. Just as the guy who was expert in managing teams of horses to plow fields found himself unemployed when tractors became available, so too the unskilled factory workers had nothing to turn to when factories closed. There are more people employed today at higher paying jobs than ever in our history. But if your only skill is the equivalent of managing teams of horses to plow fields and you're unwilling or unable to train for other things and to move away from the farm area you've always lived in, you're going to have a hard time finding consistent work and income.

Getting educated or trained for a job is the ticket into the meritocracy of our society. Not always, and not everywhere, but opportunities exist for those who have worked to get the right background to pursue them. If you do nothing, you get nothing.

The ".99" pricing is hundreds of years old and used today not to try to fool anyone but because of the age old logic "We've always done it that way!" Same with the "9/10ths" on gas prices.

A more recent adaptation of the fool the customer activity is going $9.98" instead of $9.99 or the former $9.95 to get people thinking they're saving a lot. But the biggest GOTCHA! is still the charge 'em $50/yr to give us their money! Give people the illusion of saving money and people will pay any price. Basic marketing fact.
