comparing lighted bathroom mirrors. What are important elements?

I am looking for a horizontal 40x36 lighted rectangular mirror for above my new master bath sink. There are so many price points and it is difficult to compare them. What are the elements we should be looking for in a good mirror and do you need over mirror vanity lighting if you have a lighted mirror? How much should we expect to spend? What should we avoid?

We read about some mirrors that give off yellow spots and want to avoid that. Thank you.

You're asking for a very specific item. I recommend going into a showroom and looking at them in person. That will help you choose. The questions you're asking are extremely general without having an idea of your taste and style.

As for other lighting, you will need general lighting for your bathroom if a lighted mirror is all you have. However, if you have a regular mirror and a light over/beside it, it depends on the size of the room whether you need additional lighting or not.

Thank you. We are having a hard time finding a place to view these mirrors in our areas. We have a modern design bathroom.

We have an overhead ceiling light in the bathroom but didn't know if a 2 or 3 light fixture would also be required. I know there are varying powers of light in these mirrors and would like to avoid another fixture if we could.

Have you heard of pitfalls to avoid when purchasing these? Appreciate your comment.

wowed, I agree with your response, and it's interesting to me. I would want at least sound, if not visual, separation, between a lavatory/dressing area and a bedroom. It's interesting to compare the bedroom/lavatory area/toilet and bath area layers to a palace set up: the anteroom, the throne room (no pun intended) and then private quarters. In the same way, access and function are layered. I think most users would agree this sort of layering is a good thing. Contrast this to the evolution of design of the kitchen/dining/family room area of a house. For me, sound separation of activities (eg., tv watching vs. a conversation in a dining room, or relaxing in the family room without the din of dish stacking) or visual separation (chatting with guests in the dining room while not worrying about how the busy food prep area looks) or even olfactory separation (reading a book in the family room while onions are sliced and sauteed in the kitchen). The grand, open flowing floorplan for these areas is popular, but for me, I prefer a little segregation, especially as the number of users and potential simultaneous uses goes up. Seems to me, as the average household size has shrunk and more people are living in a house of only 2 or 3 people, sure, the open floor plan can work. But for now at least, I want a little bit of separation of activities, and I like my "antiquated" floor plan, with separate kitchen, dining room, family room (tv) and living room (piano). A tv and piano in the same room would be a nuisance for us. So I guess on a more micro level, I'm looking to separate activities in the bathroom. Natebear and snookums2 thanks to you both for commenting. I like the oval and that was always going to be the mirror, the one with the frame #1. Then I found that frame material and it looks lovely with my paint choices and the marble. The vanity will be painted a semi sheen light med gray. The walls are a light gray. Both will have blue undertones that really pick up the hints of blue in the finish on the frame. The sconces may have to go. I really like them but they are bigger than I thought they would look. I bought them online. The vanity will take up some of the depth to help offset the size of the sconces I think. The location of the sconces are set, but the style may have to change. The #s1 and 2 seem safe to me. #8 I am liking now, but it changes moment by moment! HElp! I will not commit to the mirror until the vanity is in in a week or 2. But I want to get some input with what I am thinking, and you guys always come through with great feedback.

Thank you flyleft, I appreciate the kind words! I was so hesistant on this purchase b/c of the cost but the free returns made me do it, nothing to lose! chickadee - that's actually the only finish it comes in, in their description it's burnished silver but the photo looked like a much more bright finish than it truly is. GREAT idea about getting extra crystals! I never would have thought of that. I was actually talking with my husband this morning on how difficult this light will be too clean!! Jeannie and Sheila - the light is from Murray Feiss's Lucia collection. I purchased it from 1stoplighting.com. They offered free returns (huge + for me) and 150% price match guarantee. I ended up saving a little over a $100 through them. The vanity is made by ambella and is the monique sink chest. you can find it on a bunch of different online sites. It hasn't arrived yet but I'll be sure to post more pics as things get installed! I really do appreciate all the feedback, this forum is fantastic!

The junction box for the light is probably mounted to a stud, which doesn't happen to be centered on the vanity. There are ways of adjusting the box's position, or replacing it with an old work box that can be cut into the drywall just about anywhere. However, in many cases, moving that box wouldn't be trivial. At the very least it would require drywall patching, and there's a good chance the electrician would have to fish a new cable to the box because the existing one wouldn't be long enough. It;s up to you, but if it were my house, I probably wouldn't bother.

Thats a very specific size you’re looking for, your options may be limited. In mu quick search, I didnt find one lighted mirror at 40x36. You may find some though. Go to some lighting store, they’ll likely be the only place to actually see one in person. General things to consider :

-Look at reviews for the look or mirror you like. You’ll likely find out fast what is good and what is garbage. Normally you get what you pay for, but you can really pay a lot for some of these mirrors.

-Surface mount or in-wall? If you want in-wall, make sure the ones you look at are rated for in-wall mounting. Surface mounts can stick out a fair amount from the wall.

-What are your lighting requirements? Is it just for ambiance or general lighting, or do you need specific lighting for makeup or other tasks? That should help narrow down if you need a full surround light, side lighting, top/bottom, or back lighting.

-I’d opt for something fairly bright, with a dimmer so you can adjust as needed. The brighter lights will also reduce your chances for wanting/needing an additional fixture.

-Get something with a decent warranty, or lighting that is fairly easy to fix or replace. If the lighting fails in 5 years after your warranty is up, you have a very expensive mirror that you need to replace, or live with.

-I would try to buy locally, if the mirror breaks during shipping, thats an akward box to deal with returns/exchanges if shipping.
