Beleza vs. Minas - why, oh why can't I decide?
Comments (36)Donna - nope, I haven't yet, and our courtesy hold on our Minas will end in a few days. What to do, what to do... Karlarock - Can you tell me if your stone is oiled in the photos? I really need something that will say, "Hello, I'm a black stone, and only at strange angles and bright sunlight can you see my hidden greens." ;o) Mustbnuts (I love your username, BTW!) - we'll have white beaded inset cabs on the perimeter with *some* variety of soapstone, and carrara marble on the island. Whether the island will be stained or some other paint color (green, perhaps?) is still up for debate. Further complicating things is that I have two very different carrara slabs from which to choose - one very calm one which I have seen in person, and one very veiny one I've only seen in photos. I'm leaning toward the veiny one, but I couldn't have a very veiny Minas in the same kitchen. We got photos of some new Minas slabs this morning which have even fewer white veins than the very quiet ones we have on hold, but it still appears to have a lot of the little white "spots," and I'm not sure I want that. In all of the finished Minas kitchen pictures I've seen, the stone appears solid black with white veins, without all the splotchies. Am I wrong about this? Comments (16)This is a board certified, 'highly regarded' MD. He's in practice with his wife, also board certified. I don't know if their 'nurse' is a licensed nurse practitioner, but...she's HIS nurse and when she calls in a prescription she's giving HIS licence, evidently authorized BY HIM. If she didn't note the Metrogel on DH's chart, is that the patient's fault? If the MD didn't *read* the chart, is that the patient's fault? Exactly who, if not the MD, 'prescribed' the Metrogel? This is *sloppy*! If you call this office you can NEVER speak with or receive a call back from either MD. You have to first tell a receiptionist the whole problem, then -- if she feels like it -- she will pass you along to the nurse so you can tell it all over again. My late MIL, an RN and hospital administrator, always said that dermatology is the ideal practice: Your patients don't die (do to anything you do) and they don't get well; you have them *forever*. Well, not this patient in this case. We think the practice is so large -- and so lucrative -- that it is an assembly line. There's a nine month wait for another appointment should you need to cancel a semi-annual checkup -- even calling a month in advance to re-schedule. Jodi -- Thanks for the Kukui Nut Oil tip. I'm ready to try anything, once DH gets over this nasty reaction. I've seen that stuff all over when we are on Maui. Does your DH have to keep using it, or did the condition clear up and stay clear? My DH is also very fair-skinned, with light blue eyes. His birthmom was Irish and birthfather Northern Italian. Years ago a dermatologist who was seeing him for precancerous stuff said he had the palest shade of skin. (He has to see a dermatologist regularly for screening. Too many years on the tennis team in HS and earlier days outdoors at a summer camp on a lake.) Ordinarily I would have some blistering remark to relate to you: DH's reply to the MD. He'd spent time in the waiting room calming himself, reminding himself that getting angry wouldn't help him. He couldn't think of a reaonable reply to that stupid question -- only to say the doctor's office prescribed it; here's the (useless and worse) tube of Metrogel; now what?...See MoreWhy, why, why can't I......
Comments (30)Let me just echo what melsouth said above. I was quoted an upcharge by one cabinet maker for painted white, but in our current new house the price was the same for stained or painted white from a different cabinetmaker. Perhaps you can get an estimate from another shop. It also bothers me that your cabinet maker is trying to discourage you from using white since he prefers stained. He should NOT be doing that. In a previous home, I let myself be pressured to do some things by the cabinet maker and always regretted those choices since I really preferred other things, but felt I had to go with his recommendations. As others have said, you're stronger than you even realize after sustaining the loss of your husband. It's natural to struggle with decisions following that...and sometimes I've found just getting a bit older can make decision making (particularly so many at the same time) more likely to be overwhelming. Just take them one at a time, and it will get done. My sincere sympathy over your loss, and I hope you'll still find the joy in each new day you have. Regarding appliances--if YOU like white cabinets and choose that, you can go with either white or stainless. With cherry, IMHO stainless would look best. We went with stainless in this house with white cabinets because I didn't care for the appearance of big white refrigerators. But we chose the stainless look frig that doesn't show fingerprints. I've found that the stainless undermount sink I thought I'd hate, is actually less work than my previous white one. As with so many things, in the long run, it will work out. Comments (28)Jennmonkey, the $30 comment was in the context of the story - that she was always asking for more. I didn't say anything like the rest of what you mention. I don't know where you got it from or why you used it to defend Lori. Lori didn't even say anything like that. I said it to the woman because I paid her $25 for the run, but she was asking for more. There is nothing in this story about the size of jobs. Nor is what Lori indicated that I am wasting money and time when I can do them myself. It came from nowhere except her own intention. NyceFarm, you and Uxorial asked the same thing, which is a good question. Because I never saw her at work or saw a paystub, all I can say is I have called her in the wee hours of the morning only because I knew she was at work. At her house, her husband answers the phone if I call after 11pm to let me know he hates calls at that hour LOL. I wouldn't dare call their house at 1 or 2 in the morning. A couple times she came around 3 or 4am to pick up that morning's deliveries. That's the time she got off work on those nights and came here so as not to have to make the trip again. I'm only 3 or 4 miles off her route, whereas she lives quite a ways away. It was better for her to come at that hour than to come back this way at 8am. Also, she directed me to a website for certification last year. She needed me to download some forms because she didn't have a computer. I realize none of that is proof though. So, I guess the answer is I really don't know, but I can't see all the charades either. LindaKathy, nope she didn't pay cash. She paid by debit card. I expected she would stop at the place and pay, but she preferred not having to stop. I wouldn't ask anyone to use their credit card, but that she did was fine with me. She called with the confimation number and brought the balance of the money the next day, less the $150. This was three weeks ago. Is that you were asking? Kathleen, that makes a lot of sense. As far as being tired, she fell alseep on my sofa or laid down in the boys' room several times after getting off work. One morning, she got off at 7 and was supposed to come here to pickup an order. It was to be delivered at that funeral home two miles from her house. She didn't show up and called around 8 to tell me she fell asleep in the nursing home's parking lot. I could understand that happening, knowing how often I work through the night. However, I don't want to give the impression that she was working so much for me.
