Comments (37)Surprised no one has mentioned, but even in SoCal, I love my Warm Floors in the bathroom under the travertine - could be my favorite thing! During the winter, I wanted to lie down on my bathroom floor. Glad I held out for an outside spiral staircase to the upstairs deck, two-sided office desk, pot filler, upstairs laundry, pool bath, undercounter micro drawer, trash compactor (everyone tried to talk me out of that & said they were passe'), recycling bin, fixed & handheld shower (overhead shower was a bit of a waste...), doggie door hidden under kitchen desk - people think she's magic when she appears :), pull-out shelves for printers, etc in office & grommets for wires & got rid of most of the clutter, LOVE the light system & setting up scenes - esp. our 'night track' button that saves me turning on & off 6 banks of lights just to get down to the kitchen at night, my daughter's 'all-off' button that blinks until she turns all the lights off @ night Bain-Ultra air bath - no more gross jacuzzi jets shooting out gunk! Wish I had closet lights that come on when doors are opened, had organized the pantry lay-out a little better, figured out drawers/pull-outs for wrapping paper better, looked more closely at cabinet depths - can't fit a whole lot in, perhaps put an elevator in - was $10K in the beginning & just heard a woman is paying $70K to retrofit her house for one. I need the exercise now, but who knows what the future will hold... not a whole lot more than that though - we thought it out pretty throughly. STUPIDEST purchase ever - the Aquatics laundry air sink - basically a jacuzzi for my underwear that you can't even use soap in as it bubbles over & makes a mess. You can do a better job swishing your hand around in the sink a couple of times. Whatever possessed me to get this, I don't know... Almost Done!!...See MoreThings you couldn't live without or wish you had added
Comments (60)THINGS I'M GLAD WE DID We planned for the future and ran PVC pipe underneath all our concrete walks and drives so landscape lighting could be added later. Also ran pipe for electric wires out to the backyard where we would be building our barn the next year so we wouldn't have to dig up the yard again. Wired for an entertainment system in the basement (which we are finishing now -- 2 yrs. after move-in). DH insited on 400 amp service so we would have plenty of electrical for pool, barn etc. Splurged on the kitchen cabinets and appliances. It's one of our favorite rooms and is large enough for both of us to cook at the same time. Makes cooking & cleanup easy and enjoyable. Insisted on a pool bath with a separate entrance into the home. We fired our first designer when he insisted it was a waste of space in our northern home and would present a security risk because it makes another entrance to the home. It's great not to have guests walk across our wood floor when coming in from the pool to use the restroom. It's also a great changing room for the pool and hot tub and the shower is a great place to wash the doggie. Lots of very large windows to view the beautiful landscape and wildlife from everywhere in the home. What a way to increase the endorphins during an upper midwest winter. We used to live in a house where we could barely see outside. Our coffee area in the MB suite. We saw this in a parade home and had our second (and final) architect plan for this. It consists of some cabinetry, a small refrigerator and a bar sink -- perfect for making coffee in the morning or storing juice and sodas. It's located outside the bedroom, bathroom and closet area but still inside the suite area. Planned for a single, very large MB closet. It's 10 x 15 and is a perfect size for storing all our clothes and is also a roomy changing room. A covered lanai in the back of the house to escape the summer heat but enjoy the rainstorms. Our hardwood floor (Brazilian Teak) throughout the house. One of the biggest "wow" factors to people visiting. THINGS I WISH WE HAD DONE DIFFERENTLY Mostly small size changes which you wouldn't understand unless you were inside the house. A couple of feet here and there to make a room slightly larger. We actually cut those feet off the original plan to keep it just under 4000 sq.ft. Boy, I wish we had kept them. Really checked our cabinet layout. Our laundry room has a tight area when using the fold-down ironing board. It's mainly because we chose a front loading washer & dryer which are deeper than traditional machines. Try to visualize the cabinets and how they work in the room....See MoreQuestion to Ponder - If You Had to Pick Three
Comments (17)I'm surprised I didn't respond to the other post. I actually had it open, must have gotten up or something. A while ago, I posted to a thread called Redoing white, white, white bathroom and mentioned the bathroom accessories I originally bought for my dad but liked it so much I bought it for us. It's called Spa Leaf, which is one of my favorite sets I've bought. I get tired of them quickly and like to change them out but haven't with this one yet.. it's been a year almost. There is a matching shower curtain, and from what I see of your tile, the green in it would probably go. The actual shower curtain I bought is the Moire which I bought in a blue that isn't available any more. It has a cute beaded valance for both the window & shower. A similar shower curtain is the Charisma Penneys has stuff in just about every color. I will usually only shop online for bedding, with curtains I try to go to the store as I can usually get a buy 1 get 1 for 99 cents. If you sign up for catalogs, you will get stuff that isn't even online or the store. Most times I don't even bother going out to look. The colors are true on my monitor, I do my order, go to google & put in JC Penney coupon code, then try to check out using 2 different codes, one for free shipping and one with a percentage off. I then drive the stuff back to the store when I'm done. I've found that for myself, shopping for the bedding online & having it shipped saves me money in gas as my store is 30 minutes one way. I order during a sale and usually use a code that is a percentage off on sale stuff too. If I bring it home & don't like it, that's another trip out until I do find something. Much easier to just order a bunch online and return what I don't like / want. I have a Penney's card which makes it easier. For your where do I shop: Penney's - comforters for all beds, sheets are usually my bed only as my mattress is thick, for all of the beds I buy flannel sheets from there or Sears; towels / shower curtains & curtains Next is shopping at Bed, Bath Beyond & Linens & Things. I can find the oddball curtain colors there.. like last April I bought new bedding for my daughter I couldn't find chocolate curtains at Penneys, it was at one of these two stores. I like the table linens from these two stores. I used to be able to buy towels there but they haven't had my colors the last times I shopped for towels. I look online then go out and buy from the store. Walmart - bedding for the kids. Neither likes a flat sheet so why spend the money? I've also bought my son's comforter there and find that they have a decent collection of flannel backed table cloths, and once a year I buy kitchen towels, usually spring; I buy multiples when I see one I like. Target - not much. I bought towels in sage & a certain blue I needed but the sage faded really quick. The fading wasn't the same with all towels either. The bath towel faded one way while the washcloth and hand towel faded another, so now I have 3 shades of faded sage towels that I need to replace :(...See MoreThings you wish you had updated sooner (before a gut remodel)
Comments (19)There were actually several things that we wound up doing before our full remodel...and I'm so glad we did. We moved into a house that had a 1970's kitchen (complete with an avocado stove and non-vented hood). We planned on a kitchen remodel within 2 years of getting into the house. It wound up that it's been a little over 3. We picked up a Craigslist range and got rid of the old one. I don't love the Craigslist range, but it was light-years better than the original. This range is now in our basement hooked up to help us get through our remodel. And it will remain afterward for when I can since I'm getting an induction cooktop for upstairs. We put in a dishwasher. This single thing was the most important thing that we could have done to make the house livable through a terrible kitchen. We are reusing the DW in the new kitchen. We did a bit of rewiring which was completely necessary - so of this will be able to be reused in the new kitchen. Some of it won't. But, the fact that we weren't blowing a circuit every time we used the fridge and the microwave means that it was worth it! I had a rolling cart from our previous house and that was a lifesaver in the current kitchen...the rolling cart is now in our living room serving as a place for the microwave, a few dishes and utensils, and so on to live as a "temporary kitchenette" while our remodel goes on. The cart will go away after we are finished with our renovation...it's a little bittersweet to see it go - it's been such a help through a terrible rental kitchen and another terrible kitchen in the house we bought. But, the few hundred dollars I spent for it has been completely worthwhile....See Moremojomom
