42'' Wall Mount Range Hood

Hello,

I am in the middle of a kitchen remodel and am having trouble finding a range hood. I need a 42'' wall mount type. I really like the cavaliere glass one but my contractor is weary that this hood is more aesthetic than functional b/c it may show a lot of grease & it doesn't have LED lights. I have not been able to find any other brand that makes this style in a 42''. Can anyone comment on the functionality of this hood or provide some alternate suggestions?

A vent hood is meant to do a job first and IMO check with the range or cooktop it will tell you how many CFM you need and then start from there . All hoods get dirty that is just a fact but function is 1 st . I love vent-a hood they work well and look pretty good.

If you look at the Modern-Aire site, they have several shapes where the front tapers at the top to the depth of an upper cabinet, and the sides are straight so as to butt up to, and cover, the yellow cabinet sides you mentioned. Their typical sizes are 18" and 30" high, but you could get a 24" custom one if your budget allows. Or you could get an 18" and have a box made for above it to cover that area and to which you could attach replacement moulding. The box could be made of either wood matching your moulding or sheetrock. Vent-a-hood has a stainless direct replacement if you decide to stick with the same size you now have. Between the two you've cited, at first glance, I preferred the one on eBay, solely because it has baffle filters. It is unusual to see glass hoods with baffle filters; most glass hoods have mesh filters. I prefer baffle filters because mesh filters clog quickly--sometimes with even one session of hamburgers-- and if you don't clean mesh filters often, their efficiency is compromised. But on second glance, I see that both the eBay hood and the Overstock hood are only 20" deep - that is too narrow and won't cover your front burners. Your hood should at least 24" deep. What would be the point of going to the expense of a hood, plus the additional 6" width over your 36" cooktop, if your hood won't cover the front burners? Both hoods are 860 cfm, yet both only require a 6" duct. That's good if your home has a 6" duct and you cannot install a wider diameter duct. But typically a hood with more than 600 cfms requires an 8" duct. That's because you will get a very noisy hood as all those cfms are pushing through a duct that is only 6". The duct for 860 cfm hood should be 8", or, no matter what, the two hoods you are looking at will be noisy. If you have a 6" duct that you cannot change, and you don't mind the noise, there are other hoods out there to buy that would be more than 20" deep. The other factor is how you feel about glass. It will show every splatter. Some people don't find this to be a problem; it is a kitchen after all. Others are bothered by the splatters on the glass, and have to clean it after every single use. You know which type you would be. Also, dust will settle on the glass top and be visible. Dust would settle on a stainless hood too, but won't show instantly. I won't recommend specific hoods that I haven't owned. Performance requirements first, cost vs. aesthetics to meet performance second. Assuming a wall hood... Overlap is needed front-to-back as well as side-to-side. Assume a hood entry aperture of 42 inches by 24 inches (from a 27 inch deep hood). This is a hood entry aperture area of 7 square feet. You will need 90 CFM/sq.ft. for containment of hot gas combustion products and hot oil from stir-fry. So the requirement is to be able (on high) to pull 7 x 90 = 630 CFM. To do this with typical pressure losses in baffles and ducts, a 900 CFM rated blower will likely be required, consistent with your plan. However, this assumes that the house interior pressure is not reduced (relative to outside) by more than a few hundredths of an inch of water column. Most code authorities now-a-days will be enforcing make-up air (MUA) above 400 CFM (rated). You will need either a large duct opening outside with damper and minimal filtering (perhaps dumping air into a mud-room or basement with a powerful enough heater, or a powered MUA system with filtering and heating, depending on environment. The latter alone will eat your budget. For the hood itself, one is best served by a commercial-hood-inspired configuration (often called "Pro") with a capture volume before the filtering and baffles for filtering. Ducting out the wall or up through an attic are both appropriate, but using a remote blower and intermediate silencer will yield a lower noise configuration if enough duct length is available. No matter which duct layout is chosen, capture volume and baffle filtering will preclude a thin under-cabinet hood. Bottom line, a kitchen ventilation system suitable for the specified range may not cost as much as the range, but will not be far behind if the residence is to be kept free of greasy wet cooking effluent and the hazards of dropping your house pressure are to be avoided.

I have a steel cooker hood ..glass is a bugger to clean when it gets grease on it !

Agree that the glass shows every splatter, so it will look dirty immediately after each time you cook. But also your contractor mentioned functionality, which was smart advice. That style hood has a few issues which impede its exhaust capability. One is "capture area" - that glass curvature doesn't capture much. Better is a canopy-style stainless hood to capture the smoke and grease before it can escape into your kitchen. Also, many hoods are only 20" or so deep, which leaves your front burners uncovered, so what good is that. Try to get a hood that is 24" deep if possible. If that is out of your price range, go no less than 22" deep.

In addition, those glass hoods almost always have "mesh" filters. Hoods work better with "baffle" filters. That's because the mesh becomes quickly clogged with grease, and unless you are cleaning the filters frequently, that grease will impede the exhaust function. Baffle filters will of course also need to be cleaned, but their function won't be impaired if not cleaned right away.

The Ventahood mentioned above has its fans as well as detractors. It seems most everyone agrees that it works very well. Many people feel it is much harder to clean than a traditional hood with baffle filters. If you are interested, it is best to go to a store that has Ventahoods on display, and ask the salesperson to show you how it comes apart for cleaning.
