With attention to lightnplan what do you mean? We will have 6 recessed lights, 3 pendants, and undercabinet lights. Anything else we need to add or change?

Try to pull one of the lighter colours from the floor tile and find a not too busy counter top in that colour.

10 by 12 is small but not that small, and you have nice elements so far. With the warmer floor tones, is there an area that would make sense to install butcher block counters, then the other sections something like corian or solid surface. It really doesn't look that small... employ the tones in the floor. I think a granite would not be right....but if you want the economical factor you should be able to do it and still look good. How many sections of counter do you have?

Maybe soapstone, honed black granite or Paperstone in a slate or leather color.

What is the flooring? I really like it and am looking for something sturdy to replace carpeting and sheet vinyl.

I do like the butcher block idea. I have the wall where the range is and then a half wall where dishwasher and sink and then peninsula are. The countertop does not break. I don’t mind spending money on quartz but had on my mind that granite was more durable!

The floor is a shaw floor. It’s 3x6 tile and the color is called pacific heights. It comes in 4 colors and this color worked best for what we were doing. Thanks!

I like the idea of wood block but it comes w/maintenance chores. A calm, light, little pattern countertop and backsplash is also a good idea. Your floors provide enough interest, more pattern will feel chaotic

I love the floor. I would choose quartz, probably in one if the lighter flooring colors.

I found this photo showing a black counter and solid white counter combo with your floor Some of the lightly veined black granites in a honed or leathered finish might work. Might save you a bit of money over quartz.

Just wanted to add, thanks so much! We've been looking for a mudroom floor and this it! There's even a local dealer where we can pick it up. (PS also funny, we used that same herringbone pattern for our square kitchen backsplash.)

I wouldn't rule out granite. Some read as solids, like Black Absolut. Yes, look at quartz, even corian.

But.....and this is a big but...... think about the backsplash too. Ask yourself, "if I go in this direction, say a black granite, what will be my backsplash? If I go with a beige, what will my backsplash be?" Two different looks.

A solid Quartz, whether light or dark, is a great option for you if the material is one you like. Another beautiful option would be soapstone. Depending on where you live, both could be within your budget. Avoid the temptation to choose more than one surface.

Do you like the look of either? I’m a fan of solid surface and that could be well in budget for you too.

My husband and I have redone and sold many houses, most on a tight budget. We both do demo and construction; I make the design choices. I definitely wouldn't rule out granite.

I have started with a busy floor and built from there. Take a piece of your flooring to the stone vendor and hold that floor sample up to the granite slabs. You will be able to see what will "go." You will see which granites are less busy versions of the same color(s) from the floor. You will need something more subtle than your floor. You don't want a granite that introduces any new colors that your floor doesn't possess since it is already pretty busy.

And I would decide on the "useful gray" paint after I picked granite. Take a good-sized paint sample with you when you pick your granite or decide when you get home with granite samples.

These are just a few samples--I googled them--and hardly a complete sampling of what would work. I would not make a decision from pictures, but I do see some possibilities here. Most stone vendors have a decorator or someone with a very good eye for color. Ask for help. They will also chip a piece off from slabs for you to take home and see in your space.

You could also pick any of the colors from the floor and go with a solid counter in that basic color. Granite comes in colors that are pretty solid. If they have a little fleck in them, make sure the fleck is picked up in the floor colors.

I think your kitchen floor is beautiful and warm; you obviously picked it because you loved it, and you can use a granite with it that will blend beautifully. If you were putting two patterns together in an outfit, it could be wonderful and cohesive. Let's say your floor is a fairly bold neck tie. You can put a pattern with it if the colors are the same and the scale is different, like a shirt. Your cabinets are white and your wall is grey, both simple basics. Your hardware brings out that lovely bronze in your floor. I think you have plenty of lights planned.

Below are some images of kitchens with granite counters and brick floors. I think they’re awful. Truly. But the selection depends on your tastes. I think I have an idea of what you’re looking for based on the beautiful choices you’ve already made, but who am I to rule things out for you?

We can offer opinions, and show you images to give you an idea of what other options might look like, but it ultimately depends on what looks beautiful to you. You’re not flipping a house, you’re not worried about re-sale. You want to find something pretty, and at some point decision fatigue sets in.

By all means consider all options. Make sure to look for images of the options you’re considering before you pursue them further. If you like granite with a brick floor, go for it. I would absolutely not choose it, but this is really about you. You can’t go wrong if you love it.

I love your floors! They are unique and stunning.

I would pick a surface that picks up on one of the beige mid or lighter tone colors.

This is one example... I tried to find something as close to what I had in mind.

I also think a warm butcher block would look great!

In the image that Barncatz posted above, I strongly prefer the lighter counter. I think Sophie Wheeler is right - a calm, light countertop would look best. That floor is the star of your kitchen. Anything else will compete unsuccessfully and create a look that’s too busy.

I just saw a slab of brushed or leathered Black Blue Pearl...absolutely stunning and “petable.” I am not a real fan of that stone polished but leathered or brushed it looked so different that I could not tell what the granite was. It had a beautiful muted and subtle look. My point is that if you want granite and are okay with a darker stone, looking at some of the more solid/speckled stones in a leathered or brushed finish might soften them and fit right in with that floor. They will look like a softened, solid color but will not really be one color. Plus you will have a counter that everyone “pets.”

Consider a Krion solid surface counter. Here are some possible colors:

Well we are almost finished with kitchen. I changed the wall color to accessible beige and went with bronze school house lights. We also did go with granite with a grey base. I just didn’t love the quartz. I did a longer more narrow textured subway tile with warm gray grout. Have bronze hardware to put on and it’s done..here are a few pics now and a couple of before when we bought house this past fall.
