I would put another area rug in the blank space and think about putting an ottoman in front of the small armchair in the corner with a floor lamp for reading. Unfortunately, there's not much else to be done with that dead space since it's in the direct pathway between the front entry and the stairs.

Would it help if we moved the console table behind the couch? It would give a little more room, but it would leave the back of the couch exposed.

I agree...I'd put a rug in to furnish the space. The chair in the corner seem small. I'd put in a better reading chair with an end table and lamp to make a cozy nook. I like lamps and lamplight, so if I had a lamp/end table by the chair, I'd move the other lamp on the credenza to the other side. I'd also think about adding a lamp to the left of the sofa.

Yes, a larger chair and ottoman would be nice. And I wouldn't move the console table; helps anchor the space, IMO.

To my eye, that space is a generous walkway. Very welcoming and attractive. I wouldn't put a rug there. When you enter the room, the eye should be drawn immediately to your seating area, which you have furnished and decorated very nicely.

In my house, nobody would sit in that chair. I wouldn't put a chair there. It looks a bit like a "naughty chair" in the corner LOL.

Add drapes to the smaller window and maybe a plant in the corner. Be sure the curtain rods extend past the window so that the drapes can clear the window when they're open. The rods on the sliding door are a little too short. I think this is a better layout for your TV watching area. Since the sizes are closer to one another, place the loveseat across from the chairs & place the sofa at the end. That will allow you to place the larger wood glass doored sideboard behind the sofa which is a better look for your home.

Place the table with the baskets to the right side of the fireplace for better balance.

You have done a beautiful job on your home. I agree with Beverly re switching out the couches and the sofa tables. Walking in to the sideboard instead of the baskets would be fantastic!

Beverly, I will try that tonight! I never even thought about trying to switch the couch positions. I'll have to post pictures when we try that.

Whatever you decide to do, don't crowd the traffic path. That part of the room is only empty when no-one is walking through there. Imagine a large family gathering. You don't want people to be dodging furniture, or each other.

Why not just pull the loveseat back more? You still have plenty of room to walk around. Does it HAVE to be lined up with that doorway to the right?

If the sofa table remains in the spot where it is now, perhaps something colorful peeking out of the baskets, perhaps with a little fringe or trim showing? The white in the baskets being so evident reminds me of laundry waiting to be folded. You have many positives so just have fun with it.

If that open area is just too large for you, push the couch back until the front feet are barely on the rug...that will give you a bit more room in the lounge area--which it looks like you could use-- and less "walkway". I love a good sofa table (swapping the two options would be my vote) but can see the utility of a games/puzzle table there. I could not deal with that floating TV. Something has to go under it, but I am not sure what.
