resale value: wall oven & cooktop or range?
Comments (17)Thank you all! It IS very helpful to know that the answer is truly "it depends"! I had assumed that it would be a mistake to move from the wall oven & cooktop setup to a range, but it sounds like it makes the most sense to go with whichever combination of appliances works best in the space! About resale, we have absolutely no plans to sell anytime soon. However, with my husband's job, the possibility of a work-related move is always in the background. If that happens, we need to sell fairly quickly. So, while we are trying to make remodeling decisions that work best for us, we also want to consider how they affect the overall appeal of the house. thanks, Michelle...See MorePros and Cons of Slide-In Ranges versus Cooktop and Oven Cabinet
Comments (42)The dials on a slide-in range are at the front. You don't reach over the hot burners and steaming pans to change temps. This is recommended for "universal access" kitchens because a wheelchair person can use them a little better, although the surface is not lowered. These dials are easily accessed by a child, which might not be a benefit, though, if the child is just playing. The digital clock on the upright backed models is easily seen from a distance; same with the lighted indicators that show whether surfaces are hot or oven is in use. On a slide-in, the front dials and controls are on the same plane as the cooking surface so I would assume you need to approach the unit to see the lights. somewhat off topic.... regarding ranges....We began this remodel with the intention of using our old electric coil range until it died. I began to do some research and found that the upraised back on new ranges has risen significantly in my lifetime. I suspect that the gov't began to require that the dials be positioned farther from the cooking surface--in two past ranges I've worked with the dials were cockwacky because they'd melted a bit. Today's range appears to be abt 75 inches tall at the back OR HIGHER. This is a significant design aspect if you're planning new construction. We thought we'd put our niche behind range up high enough to clear any new range but when I got new one, there it is arching in front of the bottom of the niche just a bit. If you're going for a standard range like this, forget any fancy backsplash, esp if you have an under cab hood unit there also, since it has to be mounted lower than some of the decorative hood units. Our niche extends up behind the vent unit, which allows taller bottles if I get crazy and buy one of those exotic olive oils or something. There is only about a foot of actual space between the top of the range's arched back and the bottom of our vent unit. Doesn't bother me at all. nini804, there's a quote that says that any time form goes before function, take our your wallet....See MoreOpinions: gas cooktop/wall oven or slide-in gas range?
Comments (7)Gas versus induction is a personal choice. I am installing induction but have cooked with both gas and standard electric. In my own experience, unless one has installed a wok burner, the benefits of gas stoves is overrated as my cooking output did not improve when the same dish was cooked on gas versus electric :-). I would definitely opt for a slide in range versus the contrived cooktop with wall oven below because it doesn't increase functionality at all and as cpartist posted, it decreased functionality since the height is generally lower than an integrated stove. Also, there are some models that have two ovens and so the smaller oven - which is probably the one that would be used 99% of the time is highly functional and at an even more comfortable height....See MoreShould I replace my new 30" cooktop with a double oven range?
Comments (15)I like Sabrina's idea. Are the MW and oven separate appliances that are installed independently with the MW installed above the wall oven? If the former, then another option is a Steam oven above and a regular wall oven below. Steam ovens are usually smaller and maybe that combination would fit in the cabinet as-is? You might only have to replace the MW and keep the existing bottom wall oven. Or, instead of a steam oven, maybe a GE Café Advantium? Advantiums operate as a standalone MW, standalone oven, or combined as a "speed oven" (cooking with oven & MW energy combined). If they're one appliance, then the above won't work without swapping out the cabinet as Sabrina mentions....See MoreToronto Veterinarian
