Wanted: Bittersweet Sour Orange Budwood
Comments (9)I have made marmalaide with ordinary sour oranges, the kind used for rootstock and probably what you are looking for. At first I liked it but soon grew pretty tired of it. It is very, very tart. Much more sour than any marmalaide I'd ever tasted no matter how much sugar I used. I also used to have a tree of the stuff. It flowered from seed in 3 years in the ground, but I budded some bearing sour orange onto it. I wouldn't add a second sour orange if you already have a chinotto. I've come to prefer changshou kumquat marmalaide - good flavor and not so tart. I first grafted a varigated sweet orange to my sour orange and now I've changed it yet again to 6 varieties of blood oranges. Perhaps you could find a friend with a sour orange tree from a killed sweet citrus graft. I have two friend who will give me bushels of sour oranges if only I wanted some. One friend insisted I take 5 gallons of fruit a few weeks ago. I used them for seeds which I didn't really need but.... A Cuban friend likes to use the juice for marinating pork. Comments (9)Yes, but most citrus grow true-to-type from seed due to Nucellar embryony... certainly most oranges and grapefruit. Exceptions are Meyer lemon, 'Temple' oranges, Clementines, Persian lime, most pummelos, I think. Tangors and Tangelos put off a high % of nucellar seedlings. According to my notes where I keep my citrus information, I had this filed away. This is a quote from Dr. Malcolm Manners, professor of Citrus Science at Florida Southern College: 'Nearly all of the sweet oranges (C. sinensis) come true-to type from seed. A few (some navels, 'Pineapple') make minor variations in their seedlings, even though they are technically nucellar. Nearly all grapefruit also come true-to-type. The only exception I can think of is 'Thompson Pink' which produces 'Marsh Seedless' seedlings, since it is a periclinal chimera, and the mutant tissue is not in the layer that makes the seeds. The vast majority of mandarin types are also nucellar, and therefore, come true-to-type. Also, nearly all lemons, 'Key' Lime, and most other sour-fruited types come true. Persian limes do not. Meyer is monoembryonic, so does not come true-to-type from seed. Actually, the list of citrus that don't come true is quite small.'...See MoreBergamot Sour Orange In Stock
Comments (14)Both the blossoms and the rind of the fruit are much more fragrant than regular oranges. Have you ever smelled bergamot, for example in tea? It doesn't really smell like orange; it smells kind of like orange and fragrant sour tangerine mixed with lemons, with maybe a little lavender too. As for what "photosensitizing" means, if you break off the peel and rub it on your skin and then go out into the sun for several hours, you'll find out. You'll get a nasty burn. Actually it's a lot more dangerous on your skin than it is to eat it. Like a lot of complicated things, this takes a little explaining. Nothing to worry about adding a few drops of bergamot essential oil to your tea, but these same drops on your skin could cause a really bad sun burn later. And by the same token, there's probably nothing wrong with trying a slice or two of the bergamot fruit, but it's not advisable to eat a whole fruit, not if you're going to be out in the sun for an extended period of time in the next few days. I'm not sure why anyone would eat a lot of bergamot though, the fruit is kind of bitter and sour. If you're going to peel the fruit, it might be a good idea to get some plastic gloves. Bergamot rind and essential oil is really good for adding fragrance and flavor to things. There are all sorts of recipes out there. The furanocoumarin mostly isn't harmful inside your body because there's no sunlight in there. But people who can't eat grapefruit because they are on certain types of medications should definitely stay away from bergamot. The bergamot oil used in perfumes is usually steam distilled, this removes 99% of the furanocoumarin. Unfortunately the distillation process does make the bergamot fragrance slightly inferior. The essential oil made from the blossoms of bergamot is very expensive and used in high end perfumes, it is called neroli....See MoreSeville vs. chinotto sour orange - finally did a taste test
Comments (36)I have a hyper kaffir lime tree- about 12 feet tall and 9 feet wide- is what i keep it trimmed to I use it mainly for the lime zest which i freeze and the leaves which i use fresh or frozen or dried ( when i trim it i get about 4 bushels of leaves). I am looking for a larah orange - another sour orange used to make curacao and also as an adjunct for the Seville in making a sour orange pie- much like key lime. Any help would be appreciated. It seems like all of these "odd" fruits that make wonderful marinades and sauces and flavoring agents are deprecated - not to be found anywhere in markets - which is why i started the kaffir lime tree....See Moreponcirusguy6b452xx
