Do You Grow Your Own?
Comments (6)I am trying to grow two varieties from seed. They are stratifying in the fridge now. One is for pine nuts... OK in our zone, and the other is for a nice Christmas tree (which we will shape). Pacific White Fir. My fingers are crossed! Once they finish that stratification process, I'll try some in soil under the existing pine grove, some in root riot cubes, and some in pots in potting soil. Hopefully something will work. I did purchase a little seedling of a Douglas Fir on Ebay, and I planted it a month ago. It's very happy showing all kinds of new growth! Suzi...See MoreDo you grow your own onion and preserve it?
Comments (23)Well this topic hit close to home since I processed a huge amount of onions this weekend. I had a bumper crop and they have been in the barn, curing, for quite some time. We have had such rainy damp weather that I felt I should do something else with them to keep them from spoiling. So, I did what I normally do, chop and freeze. I put them in smaller freezer bags then stack them in the large gallon size freezer bag. That way you can get out what you need and also prevents the entire freezer from stinking. My dehydrator broke this summer so I attempted to dry some in the oven. I would never recommend this, it was sheer lunacy for me to even try. It stunk up the entire house (and I am not offended by onion smell) and was a bear to clean up. You can't do many at a time and they stick to the pan you are using. Not worth it, IMO, unless you have a dehydrator. Freezing is definitely the way to go. Lori...See MoreDid you share a room with siblings while growing up?
Comments (68)I had a friend back in grade school who went to the same church as I did with my family, she had 4 sisters and the oldest 3 would rotate who got their own bedroom each year and the rest were in bunks in another bedroom while parents had their own as well (of course). I only had a brother and we both had our own room. My mom was born in Houston in 1946, my dad born in California in 1945 - her family moved out here (California) when she and her twin were 5 years old and pretty much all on both sides except for my immediate family (brother had been living there since 1996 then my parents left for Nebraska in 2007) has continued to reside in California. But we're all basically what one would think of as the definition of "nuclear family" - I have an aunt and an uncle through my mom's side and an uncle on my dad's. My maternal uncle had 3 kids, my aunt had two, my paternal uncle had 2 kids from one marriage and one kid from his second. I remember when my brother left our parents house for air force basic training, his old bedroom was turned into a home office within 24 hours - I think my mom was happy that the computer could finally be set up somewhere other than their bedroom!...See MoreDo you grow your Citrus trees inside in winter and what's your set up?
Comments (48)Bklyn, it looks like you are using the same lights as I. Nice. Are those L.E.D light bulbs? Socal very nice. I love that reflection. It looks very bright in there. NO wasted light for sure. Kvetch, you are not kidding there. I can't believe how LONG we have had this cold, snow, and below average temps, and it's not even winter yet. I keep looking at the ten day forecasters outlook and now I see 30's . no 40's. I think I am going to be sick. The ones on the porch I have to water often if I use a fan. If I don't use a fan, it can take a few weeks before they need watering, but they only stay moist thank God. The one in my all season porch, I have to water those every few days because it's much warmer in there, much more sunlight, and I also use fans. LOl. I hear you about window hogging..lol Right now my tree and orchids are competing for the best spot. Jenny, very nice. One of these days I am going to get an Australian lime. Does it produce lots of flowers that smell nice? I would go after the fragrance more than anything.. Laura, didn't it seem like yesterday when we were growing them all outside? Boy do I miss the days when all you had to do was use a hose..((( Yes, all the twist and turns one has to take to get around each tree can be such a pain. Very nice looking too.I hear you got a couple of scale? That's easy to get rid of once and for good. Let me know if you need a suggestion.)...See Moreseagrass_gw Cape Cod
