I've had it with potatoes
Comments (13)Thanks, guys Curiosity got the best of me last night, so I dug around a little in the rows and discovered a few unrotted potatoes. Surprisingly, they looked no different than the day I planted them--no sprouts. Maybe I'm just too impatient, but I've never had to wait much over a month to see them coming up. Marla, I too get mine at Rural King and have always been satisfied. I'm glad they now carry Yukon Gold. I've found these to be great keepers, and I really enjoy their size and flavor. I wish I could give you some of our extra water. I created a new strawberry bed a couple weeks ago. Well, the darn little plants are puttig on blooms, which I always remove the first year. I took one small step into the edge of the bed and sunk halfway up to my knee. Joe, I suspect you may be right as to the bacterial issue. I also suspect it has just been too cold for them to emerge--altho everything else, both perennials and other annual seeds, have emerged beautifully. Where can one get Captan?? I've always heard of no dig spuds but have personally never tried it. This may be the route I have to take. I have one old large round bale left that I could break up and use. I do recall a year (pre-garden journal, or I would look it up) shorty after we started gardening that was very mild (1997?1998?) up until the middle of January when it proceeded to drop down to Zero and sub zero temps for the next month or so...I recall it because there was new growth on the roses in my rose 'hedge' in January. Even as a farily new gardener I knew that wasnt good. Lost most of those roses that year. Anyway , we may be able to see the hellebore hyrids, sometimes nicknamed 'Christmas rose' actually bloom at Christmas this year. A hellebore that usually blooms in Spring is sending up a flower shoot now. Another hellebore , foetidis, which carries its flower shoots over the winter and blooms in early spring, is trying to bloom now.....While acceptable in a genaerlly mild climate zone like England, I cant imagine that January and February will stay this mild. May take a look at the snow crocus and other eary spring blooming spots as well. May also put out some slug bait, the foxgloves look like they are being chewed on :)...See MoreOkay, I've never seen weather like this.
Comments (21)A cool front has passed through southern WI and is headed to the east coast. Relief is on the way. Behind the front, day temps are 70s to low 80 with drier air: Dew point 60 F. No wind to speak of so can not tarry outside because of misquitos - have to keep moving or get eaten. We've had our share of rain the past 3 days. The problem was the rain clouds were strung over 200 miles and were aligned with the direction of travel. The rain front was not exceptionaly wide. The result was 200 miles of rain clouds passed over the same spot. Menomonee Falls and Milwaukee, WI got flooded. Nicolet High School in Glendale, WI got flooded: 6 to 8 ft or water in the basement and 1.5 ft of water running down the halls on hte first floor. The gym floor went under. They had just gotten in new sports gear for the fall term and it was stored in the basement. Official's preliminary estimate is $1 million to clean and repair. They think that if crews start now and work 7 days a week, the school may be in shape in time to open for the fall term. And of course by now, you have heard about the Cadillac Escalade swallowed by a sink hole. The vehicle pulled up to a stop light, the street caved in dropping the vehicle into a 15 ft deep hole and to add insult, the stop light also fell and leaned on the car. Its going ot be interesting to see how the insurance companies react to this one. I can hear it now: This was flood damage and your policy does not cover flood. The real sob story goes to a the owners of 5 to 7 homes on the north side of Milwaukee. Their basements caved in; the city condemed the properties as uninhabitible and has ordered immediate demolition. One woman lamented: "I bought this house not long ago for $120,000 and have 20 more years of mortage left. I'm loosing my house this week, but the mortage lives on." She'll get nothing from her home owner's insurance because it is flood damage, and most homes in that area do not carry flood damage because they were not in a flood plain and up to now, it was not needed. A number of cars parked in underground garages were flooded. If the water level got up to the relay box under the hood or the fuse panel under the dash, these will be totaled by the insurance firms. Comments (31)I think that you have the 4-day stomach flu. Both my wife came down with at the end of September - can't keep anything down - Have to be careful how much water you drink at one time. I was very sick for 3 days, then began to recover. Lost 5 lbs. And I had a flu shot 3 weeks before this flu. Apparently, its a much different flu than the ones the shots are for. By all means, do go to the doctor. If your boss gives you a hard time, ask him if he'd rather you'd come in and Urp! all over his desk! and expose everybody. A note from the doctor's office will verify how sick you are. In fact, if you call the doctor before going in and describe your symptoms, the doctor may advise not to come to his office. If its the same stuff that made the rounds in my neck of the woods, the gestation period between exposure and getting sick is 4 to 5 days.
